Mom-morial seed order

Feb 01, 2015 10:56

At work, when a close relative dies, we all sign a card and put in a little cash toward a gift card or something - to provide a sort of respite for the grieving person.  We're all very familiar with this lately because there's been a terrible rash of parent and sibling funerals.  So I knew that when Mom stopped chemo, a card would be in my near future.  What I didn't expect was the $130 gift card for Baker Creek.  They did well:  Mom would have approved.
I spent it all on seeds, mostly for the veg. garden.  Looks like I'll be starting tomatoes and such indoors this year (Wisconsin zone 5); I don't always do that, because I need to clean the entryway to put the shelving up, and after the lights and trays and making sure things are watered when I'm away on multiple spring trips...it's simpler just to shop Klein's - they're 5 minutes from work and have a good selection of nonstandard stuff.
But this year I'm going for it, and I ordered all sorts of interesting seeds.  Assuming the seed-starting goes well, I will take excess seedlings in to work and give them to the teammates.
For tomatoes, I ordered Purple Bumble Bee, Green Zebra, Orange Icicle, Black Cherry, Jujube Cherry, and Vorlon.  I considerd getting a white cherry tomato, as I've had those the last 2 years and liked them.  But, if I want just one plant I can certainly get it at Kleins - likely I'll be going there anyway for basic red tomatoes.
For peppers (chiles), I got Tequila Sunrise, Santa Fe grande, Tam jalapeno, and 'Paradicsom Alaku Sarga Szentes'.
I also got a yellow tomatillo (Amarylla) and some ground cherries.
For winter squash, black futsu, kikuza, and blue hokkaido.
For melons, green nutmeg, model, and sweet dakota rose (watermelon).
Cucumbers as well, plus the Mexican sour gherkins which are tasty and seemingly super-easy to grow.
I also got a few flowers that should be started indoors, to add to the 2014 project - the bee&butterfly garden over my septic tank.  That project has so far been a great success; I'm looking forward to seeing which perennials fared well over winter.
The rest of the seeds - and there are many - are direct-seed.  It's quite an embarrassment of riches.  Mom was proud that I had a yard, but lamented my lack of time to get it just so (a lot of that was that my gardening...aesthetic...which leans toward a more "natural" look); I endeavor to spend more time on yard&garden work this year.

zone: usda 5, vegetables
