Saffron!
Three years ago I bought some saffron crocuses from American Meadows. The day they came in the mail I planted them. The little grassy leaves came up but no flowers.
The second year I had more leaves and one flower.
Last year I got 3 flowers and made a paella, something I had been wanting to do since a trip to Spain 5 years previously.
This year I dug up my bulbs and split some of them apart and crossed my fingers. I wanted enough saffron so I could make multiple batches of paella throughout the winter. Well hot diggity! $12 and three years later I am a very happy camper.
Plus they're really pretty flowers!
