Hello, everyone! I am brand new at growing things, but I'd like to start. :) My boyfriend and I live in a mobile home in Georgia (not as redneck as it sounds, I swear!), and I'd like to get a planter and a little something to put in it to put on the front porch steps ( Read more... )

I live in South Carolina and understand about the heat! Lots of things can do well, but you need to look at how much sun the plants will get and how much water they'll take. If it's a small planter, you will need to water almost every day for lots of things. If you get a lot of sun, this time of year you could plant zinnias for bright colors-coleus seems to do pretty well too, and can take a little more shade. Mexican petunias are another good sun plant-they grow tall, but bloom like crazy. You could go by Lowe's and see what plants they have there that you could plant right now, so you can see something pretty soon.

Also, even with heat, it is possible to over water, too! So usually check to make sure the planter has good drainage and that the soil is moist but not soggy. Some things like to dry out completely before getting watered again.

Regular petunias seem to do OK in the heat, too--I see a lot of them around town. And they smell great!

ETA: I keep thinking of things--mildew is a problem, not so much when it's dry like this, but be sure to water in the morning, not late in the evening.

Check out mini daylilies like Stella d'oro. Those things are hard to kill, and a great place to start for new gardeners.

My first thought was Night Blooming Jasmine because it's so pretty and smells divine.

I've been container gardening for years. I <3 it.

Haha! This made me laugh :D How do you cope with the heat? Must be nasty on these 100 degree days.

Anyway: gazanias. Pretty, and put up with a sniff of water once established. You can also save seed really easily.

The jasmine is a great idea because you can train it up a trellis/pole - would be lovely to have outside your front door.

How about hot peppers, if you want to grow veggies? And tomatoes, as long as you water them.
