So I finally got a few more plants planted today. To help me keep track of the varieties, these are the veggies I've planted so far.
A couple of weeks ago, I planted:
First barrel - tomatoes, one Box Car Willie and one Hillbilly. William just had one left of each of these. I decided to try them.
Second barrel - tomatoes, two plants of Better Boy. A familiar variety that has sometimes done well in the past. Today I saw one tiny tomato forming on one of these.
Third barrel - a bunch of tomato plants had come up volunteer in the barrel and especially in the bucket in the center that had compost. I'm pretty sure they are the little gold Sun Sugars because those came up as volunteers last year close to that barrel. I pulled out the compost bucket (not doing those this year - it didn't seem to work as planned last year), added dirt and a bag of the compost I bought at the recycling center and mixed it in, added mulch on top. The plants that were in the barrel and I left seem to be doing very well. I need to remember to take the bucket full to Anna.
Today I planted:
First big red tub - tomatoes, two plants of "Something that starts with W" Peach. William told me the whole name, but I forgot. I'll have to ask him again. On the marker, he had W. Peach. The picture he had looked similar to Mr. Stripey. He said they bear well and are sweet.
Second red tub - cucumbers, Summer Top Hybrid, two starter pots, each had two or three plants. I bought all of my cucumber plants at Shafitzel's this year. Nobody at the market seemed to have many, and they sold out quickly.
Third red barrel - cucumbers, Sweet Slice, two starter pots.
I still have four more starter pots of cucumbers to plant, two each of two varieties. And I noticed that the big pot that had the variety Bushy last year has volunteers coming up, even though I planted Cosmos in it this year. We'll see if they amount to anything.
Does anybody want some Lemon Balm? One of the last two big tubs is full of it, and I'll have to dig it out to plant the cucumbers. It goes everywhere, it's related to mint. But oh, it smells good, when I mow or even just brush against it. There is more in the Iris bed, too, that should come out, but who knows when I'll ever get that done.
