Songs I like

Jun 16, 2005 22:23

I'm averaging almost 30 hours a week at work. Sweet. If I stay at that store long enough, I could be like Nilda and work from 8 AM to 9 45 PM. But... I don't think I will do that.

I have a new baby first cousin once removed. Her name is Ella.

There's jazz in portuguese on the radio. It seems that, recently, Brazilian Portuguese music is everywhere. And it's not just my Mom's bossa nova CDs. Not all the time. Portuguese is the second language of the suburbs of Boston.

Last week I heard a news story about a new format of radio that "plays everything." It's called Jack FM, or Hank FM, or Bob FM, and it plays hits from several decades, like somebody sampling his personal music collection. I was intrigued because I like to think that I like everything-- pop, rock, jazz, rap, hiphop and R & B, reggaeton and bachata, country and classical, even some metal (mainstream metal, hair metal, splattergrind metal... to an extent). And the random world music they play on WERS. Pretty much everything that I can hear on the radio around here-- except emo, punk rock and talk radio.
What stood out to me was that all but one of the artists mentioned on "Jack FM" were men, and all of the stations had guys' names. They certainly weren't playing "everything" as I define it.
It just so happens that, at the same time, one of our local stations just switched formats and is now "Mike FM." And I've been keeping tabs on what they play. Most of the music is hits from the 80's and 90's, with some 70's funky disco mixed in. To their credit, they do play a good percentage of female acts or bands with at least a female member They've played Alanis Morisette, the Bangles, Fleetwood Mac. But no black artists except for those 70's disco groups. And mostly pop music. Still not "everything."

Radio may be trying to switch formats to regain lost listeners, and the variety of the "everything" format is nice. But as somebody who really does claim to like everything, I'll probably just keep my finger on the scan button when I'm in the car. And the rest of the time I'll get my music the college student way: by keeping my own vast and varied collection on my computer.
