Popcorn at the ready

I saw the first film on my list for this year today, The Greatest Showman. It was entertaining enough, although a bit too saccharine and cringe-inducing in some places and some of the cast were not quite up to scratch. I rather liked whoever was playing the bearded lady, she was great, the rest of the cast were kind of eh. Whoever was playing Queen Victoria was quite awful! The music was quite good though, a few of the songs were inspirational and I can see them becoming important to certain groups of people. Some huge artistic license was taken with the story and there were a couple of large errors (men in the Victorian era did not wear wedding rings and the flag flying at Buckingham Palace should have been the Royal Standard as the monarch was in residence, the Union Flag has only been flown at Buckingham Palace since 1997 anyway). Besides, I think Michael Crawford will always be Barnum.

Ah well, at least I got to see it! There's actually quite a few films I want to see this year, there's a lot of good ones on offer. Even more so than the past two years and they've not been lacking in that department. These are the ones I'm hoping to see:

Downsizing: Matt Damon shrinks himself.

Game Night: A group of friends who meet regularly for game nights find themselves trying to solve a murder mystery.

Tomb Raider: The film of the rebooted game.

Ready Player One: When the creator of a virtual reality world called the OASIS dies, he releases a video in which he challenges all OASIS users to find his Easter Egg, which will give the finder his fortune. - I love the book, it's just a brilliant homage to the 1980s, pop culture, video games and the internet in general. I just hope the film can do it justice.

Wonderstruck: The story of a young boy in the Midwest is told simultaneously with a tale about a young girl in New York from fifty years ago as they both seek the same mysterious connection. - I'm unsure about this one, it sounds intriguing but the trailer looks very meh.

Avengers: Infinity War: Avengers versus Thanos. Who will survive?!

Deadpool 2: Bigger. Badder. Deadpoolier.

Mary Shelley: The love affair between poet Percy Shelley and 18 year old Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, which resulted in Mary Shelley writing Frankenstein. - Not sure about this one, it could be good or it could be quite dull.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Paul Rudd has more adventures with ants, now with Evangeline Lilly!

Mary Queen of Scots: David Tennant is Scottish.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix: A second attempt at telling the Dark Phoenix story, hopefully it will be better than the previous one, except without Hugh Jackman.

First Man: Ryan Gosling is Neil Armstrong.

There's a few others that look okay but I think are more for TV viewing like Midnight Sun, The House With A Clock In Its Walls, Finding Your Feet, and Mary and the Witch's Flower. And probably Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindlewald, I don't think I could happily pay to see that in the cinema.
