As the half dozen of you who use Google Reader are no doubt aware, Google announced recently that it would be closed down on July the 1st, sending a veritable shockwave of indignation across the internets. Apparently not enough people were using it which is probably Google-speak for 'we weren't getting any money from it'. Certainly the amount of people using it has been enough for various sites to mention it and create lists of alternative places.
The fun part now is not only trying to find somewhere new to read all my RSS feeds but also getting off all the articles I had stored on it. I have quite a lot of both. I really don't want to spend my weekends going through everything I have on there but I don't have much choice if I want to keep them! I want to get it sorted as soon as possible, rather than leave it to the last minute. Yesterday I went through all the feeds I have added on there to make sure I still want them all. Some are blogs that haven't been updated for years or comics that have ended so I think I'm safe in removing those. I had 80 feeds initially and I've managed to whittle it down to 69. Next is all the stuff I've saved! They'll all be transferred to Pinterest and/or Delicious so it's good that I have places to put them. I'm kind of tempted to just dump them all on Delicious with the intention of going through them at a later date but I'm pretty sure that later date will never happen. I think all the articles I shared got lost when Google+ was introduced which is pretty sucky but at least that's one thing less to go through.
It's so annoying though. Things like Google Reader are supposed to make the internets easier to use, not cause a mass panic when they close down. And this is Google too, you'd think things would be pretty safe there. There's lots of sites that have set up in the wake of Reader's demise but I'm wary of using little one person projects. I want something that's going to be pretty secure and stable and long-lasting so I won't have to do this again in a year's time!
