I've had quite a busy few days and haven't been online much to post till now.
On Saturday there was a market of Lancashire-ness so I took my mother off to see what delights they had. The weather lately has been kind of crap, wet and grey and not especially warm, but on Saturday it was actually rather nice. The market was quite a decent size but a lot of the stalls were very samey. We weren't expecting to buy anything much but we came away having bought several things! There was a bakery stall with samples of lemon drizzle cake and
parkin; I'm fairly partial to the former and my mother is partial to the latter so we each got a sample. My mother had half of hers and then asked to swap! The lemon drizzle cake was rather bland but the parkin was actually quite nice. Then I noticed that they also had
Goosnargh cakes. I really like Goosnargh cakes and have made them several times but they have caraway seeds in which my mother doesn't like. Making them without the caraway seeds is Not The Same. Further on was a stall from
Cumbrian Delights selling various preserves. They had a very yummy chocolate and mint curd which was like eating a melted After Eight mint, and also a lime curd which was very nice and only £1.50 so I got a pot of that. There was also stall from
Fitzpatrick's Temperance Bar where you could get a free sample of any of their drinks. They had a very dodgy sounding blood tonic but it was so named because it fortified the blood rather than being made from it. Although in Lancashire, I wouldn't have been surprised if it had been the latter. My mother had a sample and decided it might help all her aches and pains so she got a bottle. I don't think we've ever got so much at a market before!
Sunday was spent going through my notes from the last lot of genealogy research I did quite a while ago at the Records Office. I never got around to writing it up properly at the time. I'm intending on doing some more research soon so I want to have all my infomation up to date first.
The forecast for Monday said that it was going to be really nice, sunny and warm and no rain at all. Because the weather has been so appalling lately, I've not been able to do much in the garden at all. There was quite a lot of stuff that needed doing, especially seeing as I've ordered some plants from Thompson & Morgan ready for next spring. They should be delivered by the end of September and obviously will need to go somewhere! I spent the morning pruning back a huge Juniper bush that did not take too kindly to it and scratched my arm to buggery. The afternoon was spent doing more pruning of an old heather that seems to be dying off and a small bush type thing. On Sunday, Mr Nextdoor had given us a rhubarb bush as my mother happened to mention to him that we wanted one so that had to be planted. It was all finished by about 3pm and I was just going to jump in the shower when my aunt arrived with the two munchkins in tow. They stayed for about an hour, sitting out in the sun. Well, apart from the Littlest Munchkin who has taken a liking to the menu planner I made which is on the front of the fridge. She had fun making us up a menu for the coming week which was totally adorable, as you can see:
In case you can't read her writing - she is only 7 - , this is her menu:
Saturday - starwberry ice-cream for Nathaniale choclarte ice-cream (choclate flake)
Sunday - Ham and pinaple pissa
