So apparently I'm not having a crappy enough time of it at the moment and the world decided to add some more on by damaging the one thing that's making me happy right now.
Yesterday afternoon I'd gone to a local retail park and was in the process of parking up. I'd spotted a place between two cars but wasn't sure if I'd be able to get into it seeing as the Aygo is bigger than my Matiz. I tried to drive into it being supremely cautious and after a couple of shunts decided it wasn't going to happen and backed out. As I'd been aiming for a spot closer to the shops, I'd gone past a line of empty spaces and momentarily wondered if I should reverse back down to them (it was one-way only) but realised that was Not A Good Idea and decided to drive on round to the next lane. Obviously, all that deliberating took a matter of seconds while I was sitting in the road bit between the two rows of parking spaces. As I was just about to pull away, I must have caught some moment on my right-hand side, and turned round to see a HUGE
Renault Megane hatch backing out. I didn't have enough time to move out of the way so I pretty much just watched it reverse straight into the side of my car.
One heart-wrenching -crunch!- and one big swear later, I was out to see what damage had been done. A tiny little woman came out of the Megane, apologising profusely and said that she just didn't see me. Translation: I didn't check my mirror before I backed out. While I'm looking at the side of my car, some bloke shouts, "Hey, can you shift your car out of the way?" so that he could back his out. Most sensitive.
So we swapped details and I did my shopping and then rang the insurance company as soon as I got home. They said it would be passed onto some other company - I have no idea why - and that company would sort out the repair and courtesy car. The other company,
Helphire, rang this morning; they confirmed details and said that they couldn't do anything until they had an admission of liability from the other driver. They tried ringing her then and there but she wasn't in. I found it a little odd, that they'd contact her directly rather than going through her insurance company. Well, anyway, nothing will happen until they've heard from her and she's admitted it was her fault. I hope it doesn't take long for that.
Thankfully the damage to my poor little Aygo from the great big huge whacking Megane does not look too bad. There's a large dent in the wheel arch of the off-side back wheel that goes up to the back door. It's brought some of the paint off and also there's a possible long scrape along the side of the wheel arch at the back of the car. Most of the damage is to my pride and the car's ego, I think. I've not even had it a month yet and this has happened. I think that's the worst bit. That and the fact that having to make a claim on my insurance will make the price go up. It's due for renewal in July too, I dread to think how much it'll cost me now. *sigh*
