I've recently started to get e-mails from people wanting to advertise on my website or to link to it on their own site. I don't quite get the last one because it's not like you need permission for that, although it is nice to know who is linking to your site and where. The thing is that I've yet to get an request that's actually relevant.
I just got an e-mail from someone asking if they can link to my site on their fashion blogs. I'm really struggling to see the connection there, so I'm guessing that they've not looked at my site at all and think it's for cross-dressers or something like that. The e-mail didn't give any information about the blogs at all; actually the entire content of it was 'can I link to your website on my fashion blogs?' Well, I can't really stop you but is it even relevant?
I suppose it's slightly better than the last e-mail I got which was from someone asking if they could put a banner ad on my site. Didn't give any information about their site at all and it turned out to be for sex toys. Because Trans people are all about sex toys obviously. Even though the e-mail bragged that they were ranked in the top 5 in the UK, it still didn't give me the name of it. Apart from the fact that it was completely inappropriate, the whole reason of having an actual domain and server is to get away from adverts! If there had been payment involved that would have been an entirely different matter. In that case, I would have considered it for a whole minute before saying 'fuck no'.
