Oh fuck.

One reason I was concerned about having a Tory government was that, with their record of homophobia, they would revoke all of the rights that LGBT people have been given by the Labour government. Obviously, there's other reasons to be concerned about having a Tory government, but that's just one that I felt most strongly, especially after it was ( Read more... )

I was afraid of this too. I'm worried the LibDems are going to turn into our Green Party (they were strong left wing, went in with the current government and now are just an extended part of it. But they are the extended part getting the blame, which means the other shower of shits will probably get through this with only a minor blemish). England has always been my escape plan :( So I'm obviously quite interested. Also, Ireland tends to say 'But they didn't do it, so we don't have to' when it comes to equality legislation and Britain is the first one they point at. So much for fighting for independence!

But at the end of that waffle, I am very sorry to hear about this and I am even sorrier that it might directly affect lives of people I know!

I think people were already aware that the LibDems will be the ones blamed for anything that goes wrong with this new coalition, I'm pretty sure I heard the BBC's political correspondent talking about that the other day. They're really only there to make up the numbers so I don't know how long it will last.

Is your Green Party focused on environmental issues like our Green Party or just green in colour? It's ridiculous that Ireland is using the UK as a reason not to do stuff, especially with all the rights that LGBT people do have here. It's very silly that they keep using us as an example like that when they don't want anything to do with us ordinarily!

I hope you don't have to give up on your escape plan or that might mean I'm going to be looking for one.

the green party isn't entirely focused on environmental issues! we've got as much policy on as wide a range of issues as everyone else (and by far the best lgbt policy!)

I didn't say entirely focused, but initially that was the Green Party's background which is why it's called the Green Party. It has expanded since then and I really like their policies. I would have voted for the Greens if they had any chance of getting into Number 10 which they don't unfortunately.

they'll never take back anything that's already gone through - it's look too bad. but there's pretty much no hope of anything else progressive for LGBT people going through with a tory government.

Yeah, I couldn't believe it when I went looking for it. I read something about how the Tories were trying to suppress the article so I don't know if that's what's happened there or not.

Surely any law can be revoked. If not, we'd still be living with all the crap the Tories dumped on us when they were last in power.

This is worrying indeed and nauseating to boot. Like you said, even though I anticipated something like this, I certainly didn't expect it to happen so quickly. And wtf, Guardian, taking that article down? I'm glad it's cached so people can still view it.

I'm not convinced that the LibDems are going to have any real influence in this new government at all; I have a sneaking suspicion that they'll generally be ignored, then blamed for anything that goes wrong. :/
