This wasn't quite how I envisioned starting my weekend

I nearly had an adventure on the way home from work tonight. I was driving home and had got up to a set of traffic lights which were on red so I pulled up in the middle lane so that I could carry on gaily forward when the lights changed. While I waited, I happened to look out of the passenger side window and noticed a large magpie on the grass verge next to the road. I watched it and soon was wondering if it was injured. It was standing on its left leg only and when I was able to see the right leg, I noticed that it was bent at a very odd angle towards the body. The bird was standing very still but then made a tiny hop forwards on the one leg and then seemed to display some distress. I could almost hear it going, "Ow! Ow ow ow ow ow. I really shouldn't have done that..." I was quite concerned but I was kind of stuck. There wasn't anywhere to pull over and even if I did, I had nothing to catch the bird with and nothing to put it in once I had done. So I had to drive off feeling really shitty about it.

As I got into the village a few minutes later, I remembered that there's a vets on the main road albeit right at the other end. I wondered if they'd be able to help at all so I went there and asked. The vet that I spoke to said that they might be able to help the bird but it depended on the extent of the injury and they might just end up putting it to sleep. At least that would put it out of its misery and stop it being attacked by a cat or run over by a car on the road. They gave me a cardboard box and a towel to use to catch it and I drove back up the road. By now it was about 5.20pm and although I was driving in the opposite direction to the traffic, I still seemed to get stuck in it so it took ages to get back up to the junction. I parked in a handy pub car park and then made my way across the busy road to where the bird had been. There was no sign of it at all. I had a good look all over, trying not to feel too much like an idiot in front of the traffic that was sitting at the lights. After a few minutes of searching and tramping over the sodden grass, I had to admit defeat. Then I had to drive back in the traffic to the vets to return the box and towel. It was nearly 6 o'clock by the time I got home, 45 minutes later than usual.

So that was the fun start to my weekend! I still feel so bad that I had to drive off and leave the poor bird, even though I really couldn't help it then. At least I went back and tried to do something. I'm so glad it is the weekend though and I don't have to think about work till Monday. I don't really have anything planned. Well, except watching the Red Sox game on Saturday night. By the way, guys, nice job of working it so that there is a game for me to watch. Maybe I'll just play lots of PS2 and catch up on my reading. I've not even cracked open Casanova's book and had to renew it yesterday!

Edited to add randomness that I forgot about: At work today, I was standing at the photocopier minding my own business when a random person suddenly pointed to the ring that I wear on my right thumb and asked if it was the One Ring. My immediate response was, "Why yes, I really am Frodo and I didn't throw the Ring into Mount Doom at all. Don't be fooled by how I look, it's just a Glamour. Just don't look at my feet." Unfortunately what I really said was, "Erm... no?" Master of the witty retort me.

how about that local sports team?, funny, aw moment of the day
