We have a date for the new King's coronation! Saturday, 6th May, 2023. There's no information yet as to whether there's going to be a bank holiday for it. The Monday before is the May Day bank holiday so I suppose that might get moved to the Friday or the Monday after to make it a long weekend. It would be nice to have an extra bank holiday added so we get the Friday and the Monday for a very long weekend!
I'm surprised that it's going to be so soon, especially as the Queen had to wait over a year for her coronation. I suppose there was more to organise for hers because of it being unexpected, I imagine there has been some preparation for Charles' already. The Queen's ceremony lasted for 3 hours and had 8,000 guests crammed into Westminster Abbey on additional seating. According to the BBC, Charles' ceremony will be shorter, more diverse, and the guests will be limited to the 2,200 that the Abbey holds. They're also predicting that it's going to be a mix of ancient traditions and modern adaptions. The 14th century King Edward's chair and 17th century St Edward's Crown are staples though, along with the Stone of Scone which will be loaned from Scotland for the occasion. Of course it's all going to be televised. The Queen's coronation got 20 million viewers in the UK; it will be interesting to see how many Charles' will get in comparison and how many watch worldwide.
