The Shibuya hustle and bustle went on day in and day out like clockwork. This day wasn't any different with people rushing home from work, students gathering to meet at stores and cafés, while others just came to the busy city to loiter and pass the time.
Among the familiar sounds of the noisy crowds, the passing buses, and the hum of the train line overhead came a loud shout from a blond teenager. He weaved his way through the crowd, turning on his heel to wave behind him. "C'mon, yo! You guys seriously gotta haul ass!"
Some distance away were three teenagers walking at a leisurely pace after the hyperactive boy. It was supposed to be a race of sorts to the Wild Kat, although Beat seemed to be the only actually competing. The smallest of the trio tried to close the gap between her friends and her brother, eventually stopping to cup her hands around her mouth, giggling all the while. "That's not fair, Beat! You got a head start."
"Just let him go, Rhyme. There's no way he's going to stop now," said Neku, a few paces behind.
Beside him was a bespectacled
brunette who simply laughed at her friends antics as she adjusted the
stuffed animal in her arms. "Neku's right, Rhyme. You know how Beat gets when he's really at it."
"I know, I know. I just wish he'd slow down a little."
Beat hadn't heard them, not a single word reaching his ear yet he eventually slowed down unconsciously, right as he reached the Miayshita Park underpass. First to a jog then finally to a complete stop. He stood there for a moment simply staring at the post not far from where he stood by the road. This had been the place of the accident...
Things may have been different now - especially considering that everyone was here, back in the Real Ground of Shibuya - but that didn't mean he had forgotten that fateful day. His eyes moved downward, expecting to see a small bouquet of flowers at the foot of the post. But there were none. He heaved a sigh of relief, closing his eyes for a moment to collect himself.
It may have only been less than a minute but Beat had been so lost in his thoughts that he hadn't noticed his friends walk up behind him. The only thing that jarred him back to reality was the light tug at the hem of his shirt. He opened his eyes and looked down at Rhyme who stared at him with worried eyes. "Beat?"
And then came Neku's voice. "You okay, man?"
Beat kept his gaze on his sister, a small smile growing on his face. He nodded, bringing up an hand to muss up Rhyme's hair affectionately. Both she and Neku knew what happened here, but he was glad that neither of them brought it up. At least not aloud.
It didn't take long for their other companion to chime in. "I feel like I'm missing something here."
"It's nothing, Shiki. I'm aight. Jus' doin' a little thinkin'."
Neku pressed his lips together in a thin line. "That doesn't sound like somethin' you would do."
Beat looked confused for the slightest of seconds before, "Yo! You take that back Phones!"
"No way!" And with a light jab to the arm, Neku took this opportunity to get a head start of his own to their destination. "I thought this was a race. You guys coming?" Without looking back, Neku sped off towards Cat Street.
"N-Neku! Wait up!" And with a push of her glasses, Shiki began runnning to chase after him.
With the two of them left behing, Rhyme looked up at Beat again, that all-to-present innocent smile on her face once more. Beat's returned it with a grin of his own. "C'mon! We can't let 'em win this one."
"Right!"
At least they were back. All of them. Safe, alive and together.
Beat didn't get up at the beep of the Dreamberry finishing its recording. Instead, he rolled on over to face away from the sun peeking through the blinds still in a deep slumber. The device blinked twice until the connection finally fades and cuts.
