A strangely timed dip in the contentment

I was in a good mood right up until people started arriving to eat birthday cake. I was feeling really well prepared for the stampede, for once. I had moved all my tables into one long row stretching from the livingroom into the study. I had made lots of coffee in thermoses and tea in teapots and put everything up on the long bar counter in the kitchen, that's usually cluttered and unavailable (the counter, not the entire kitchen). I had ordered three big cakes and mom gave me a ride downtown to get them. I gave mom the simple job of lighting the candles in the fireplace so she wouldn't be in the way just before people started arriving.

And then, as I sat down with coffee and cake to open presents and just enjoy my people, my mood soured for some reason. I have no idea why. But I just found several of my friends annoying! Inez was a pain the entire evening. Josie was a bit of a downer. Lee just made me tired. Even the ones that didn't actively annoy me still came across as a little boring, less colorful. My dad hardly said a word and neither did my sister. I didn't get much opportunity to talk to Amy. Annie was great as usual, but she left too soon. Joanie was the highlight of the evening, but she came too late, and I found myself wishing that Inez would leave the two of us alone, but she didn't leave until Joanie did.

I sound like a spoiled brat and that's how I felt too. It was weird. I usually love birthday parties. My favorite cake and presents to open - I'm like a kid about that stuff.

I kept feeling down until this afternoon. I had a lot of work to do, missed a deadline yesterday and hence missed my Tuesday lunch with Joanie. Didn't have time to exercise Monday or Tuesday. Didn't have time to clean up after the party. Had a dentist appointment this morning.

But this afternoon, I delivered the project and finally had time to wind down in front of the TV with a cup of tea and some gift chocolates. My lower right wisdom tooth was all shiny and new and it was nice to have that over with. And when I got to the gym, Viv turned out to be the substitute step-up instructor. My favorite aerobics meanie! And best of all: the step-up class didn't make me tired. At. All. I was truly and honestly ready to go another hour. I have reached a new level of fitness lately, it feels amazing.

So now I'm feeling good again. I still don't know what that little surly cloud was about, but at least it's gone now.
