Improvised Onion Soup Recipe: aka "I have a bag of onions, let's make dinner"

My dad (whose mother is Hungarian and grew up in Hungary) likes to quip that the proper Hungarian way to cook is to not have any of the ingredients.  With that in mind, I present you with my recipe for onion soup, made entirely out of whatever crap I had lying around the kitchen that I was pretty sure wasn't rotten.  I am proud of myself.

You will need I used:
  • A couple onions
  • Butter
  • Olive oil
  • Water
  • Salt, pepper, and oregano
  • Pasta
  • Egg
  • Four
  • Grated cheese.
Step one: take about 1/4 cup of butter, a tablespoon of olive oil, and some onions, and put them in a saucepan.  Fry on low heat while you do other things.

Step two (topping): Mix together 1/2 cup flour, one egg, and 1/2 cup melted butter (because I had no milk).  Put them into some sort of receptacle and stick them in the oven (I put them in at around 350 degrees.)

Step three: throw a volume of water approximately 2/3 the size of the amount of soup you want to make into the saucepan, and add salt/pepper/oregano/whatever else you have handy to make things less bland.

Step four: cook up some pasta.  I love pasta.  I like funny-shaped noodles; I had curlicue ones with this particular bowl of soup.

Step five: pour the pasta into a bowl, pour the onion broth over it, take the flour/egg/melted butter stuff (bread...?) out of the oven and crumble it over the top, and throw on a handful of grated cheese.

Voila!
