Work at MCC continues to be hectic, I spent all last semester cleaning and organizing the shop plus reworking the curriculum. This semester I have been working with another professor to try to get things running smoothly for next year but we butt heads a lot. I think we agree on the big picture but our teaching styles are drastically different. In a nut shell I would prefer students to think through how to construct a part on the machines, the other guys believes that they should be given a step by step set of instructions to make the part. Its not that I think his rational is wrong, in the field they will sometimes be given a process sheet. My point of view is school should prepare you to think through complex problems. I believe that anyone can make a simple object with the machines we use but a true machinist can make anything. That being said My section of students has been able to out produce his group by 2:1 . These guys that I have trained know their machines so well they can crank out a part almost as fast as I can. Our boss has more or less decided to keep out of it, he can see both of our points of view so we are left to negotiate the future of the program.
Today Ed (my boss) began to work out new permanent positions for both of us. Last semester we were awarded a 15 million dollar grant and it seems as though MCC is going to make us full time. Is funny in the face of my recent success I am tempted to walk away. Not because I have any real grudge against my co-worker but more because I want to be an art teacher not a shop teacher. Of course there are other considerations like Max's future and financial stability both of which would make me want to keep my current job. But Some of the classes I would have to teach would drive me crazy. Such as blueprint reading (uggg) remedial Math (Funny, because I am TERRIBLE at math) and probably Osha safety (no funny comment needed). Plus I have to drive almost an hour to work each way and I hate driving. On the flip side I make 35/hr plus state retirement and if I go full time I hear the benefits are good. But as an art teacher I make 55-60/hr plus state retirement though I dont get the hours. All and all its a lot of first world problems but I did not spent the last 7 years in college to be mediocre. I guess we will see where I am in 6 months...
