INTERNET CONNECTION ON THE XBOX 360

Right, so, I'm writing this to see if anyone here has any experience with port switches.

I just bought an XBOX 360 about four hours ago. So far so good. I've played around with Lego Indiana Jones and my friend played through most of Kung Fu Panda. Don't worry. I have other games. I just haven't had enough time to play around with them.

Anyway, I got a 3 month subscription to XBOX Live from a friend of mine for Christmas since they all knew I was going to get one when I got back from overseas. The problem is that my apartment on campus only has one ethernet jack and it's currently playing host to our wireless router. I don't want to pay $100 for the wireless adapter for the XBOX because I'm not really going to use XBOX Live for anything more than downloading demos and games from the Marketplace, I'm sure, so I don't know if I'll need it later down the line.

So, I'm wondering if anyone has ever had an experience with using a port switch. I've seen them online for as cheap as $15 and I saw a few over at Best Buy for $20 or more. I don't know if it's even a possibility; someone over in the comp. sci. dept. suggested it. I've got a long ass ethernet cord that reaches downstairs so if anyone has any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it.
