I'm trying to organize all the elements of my ex's life/death. There's a bunch to deal with. Over this weekend, I got a bunch of friends together and we boxed up all of my ex's stuff. That which was not carted to the dump was carted to my house. Then we gave the house a cursory cleaning. My library is full of literal tons of books, neatly boxed. My dining room is full of all the non-book stuff, which is a much smaller set. I've positioned the furniture around the house where I wanted it. I'll now have two guest rooms set up.
Here's the project list:
- Art - I need to replace the glass on five or six pictures, then decide where to hang them, or if I want to give them away.
- Maps - We're going to sort through all of my ex's hand-drawn gaming maps and toss out the less attractive ones.
- Photos - This is my boyfriend's project. I'd toss it all (and I've already tossed a lot). He's going to winnow through what's left and hopefully consolidate it to a more manageable level.
- Lamps - Two of them are missing a part I think I can pick up at a Lowes.
- China - I want to sell or get rid of the gold-rimmed stuff, then inventory and appraise the rest.
- Glassware - Sell or get rid of.
- Silverware - Appraise and decide to sell or keep.
- Stamps - The appraisal of most of the collection rendered a result of "$25-50". But today we found more that look better kept and more valuable, so I'll take that by the appraiser and see if it changes anything.
- Game books and magazines - I have someone who has offered to handle selling the stuff on eBay for me, but I'll need to give him an inventory, which means I'll need to sort the game books out from the non-game books, and the people labeling boxes weren't that specific. That means I'll need to shift and open every single box.
- Writing - At some point in the future, I need to see if any of Brett's written works are salable.
- Antique toys - There are four 1920s ceramic dolls and a few other old toys I'm going to sell.
- Bedding - Clean, fold, sort by size. I've already tossed some of it. I have the washer and dryer running now.
- Furniture repair and cleaning - The broken furniture (which was a lot) was all tossed. What's left needs a thorough cleaning and polishing. The pieces of missing veneer need to be painted/stained over.
- Car - After I get the legal paperwork tomorrow, I'll set about selling the car. I'm going to ask $4500 for it at first and see if I get any action. I'll have to have it tagged to sell it and have to get insurance to tag it.
- House - My dad will do a walk-through tomorrow to estimate cost and necessity of repairs. I need to get insurance on it ASAP.
- Taxes - After I get the legal paperwork, I'll file my ex's taxes and try to collect a refund coming for the penalty he took last year when he cashed out his retirement fund. I already have the forms filled out - I'm only waiting on the legal letters to permit me to collect.
- Escrow check - My boyfriend found an escrow check made out to my ex and I from Citimortgage from two years ago - $950. Yay for my ex never opening his mail, eh? Hopefully I can recover that money.
- Bank account and trust account - After I get the legal paperwork, I can drain my ex's bank account of the mighty $250 it should have in it. And I can have his attorney mail me the remaining $10 in my ex's trust account with him (he was dodging creditors by having his attorney hold his money and mail it to him as he needed, but he ran out last year and never collected the last $10).
- Coins - Appraise and probably keep.
- Sewing machine - It's a treadle-powered red-eye Singer. Sell.
Tomorrow morning I'll be in court getting the right paperwork (I hope). Next weekend I'm going to make homemade pho and drive my ex's ashes down to the azalea festival he liked so much, and the kids and I will scatter them there.
And then, you know, there were all of my own projects and activities I wanted to be getting on with - bees, chickens, gardening, socializing, etc. Oh well. It's worth it to have him gone.
