I don't like clams, or much seafood but that looks pretty tasty!

Yes, they are tasty. And in Rhode Island there is a mystique about them. For me they conjure up images of being taken to the beach as a child, of sun-tan lotion, feet covered with wet sand. The ones pictured above were my lunch from Aunt Carrie's yesterday. Now they are part of me, and part of last night's heartburn.

One day when I go to the east coast again I will have to find my way to Rhode Island and try some of those famous clams then. We don't really have anything like that in Vancouver... I guess we have banack though.. I am going to guess that banack is probably a lot like a clam cake only just the batter, it goes very well with jam.

On Christmas Eve, my mother used to make a version with cod fish instead of clams. And at other times of the year, squash-flower cakes, fior di zucca, very common in Italy and a Roman speciality. She would fry them in a couple of inches of vegetable oil.
