Weybosset Pure Food Market, Providence, 1926 ad.

At these 1926 prices, people would today have little problem putting food on their tables. I remember the Weybosset Market on Weybosset Street near Dorrance Street in Providence in the 1960s, perhaps the 1970s, and it was still a nifty place to shop. They had excellent meats and produce. Shoppers and workers in the downtown (now "downcity") area would often stop off here to get food needed for cooking dinner after work. Then they would grab a bus or a trolley to get back home. There was no store parking. Fresh swordfish at 30 to 38 cents a pound sure sounds like a deal, even for 1926. Wow, 49 cents for a a full pound of coffee, not 10 ounces! Just think, the country was headed for a depression in three years. I'm glad we live in such better times now.
