The Strange Appeal of Teen Movies

Aug 10, 2006 18:01

I am not your typical blogger.  I am not a sixteen-year-old girl.  Double that, and you're still too young.  On top of it all, I'm a  high school teacher...and most of the people who read my LJ are former students.  Of mine.

This afternoon, instead of napping, reading (still have those dreaded EE's to read), or cleaning up toddler clutter while said toddler was at the babysitter's, I chose to go to the movies with my friend
audi7, another high school teacher, to boot.  Did we see something intellectual?  Something aimed at our age group?  Nope!  We saw John Tucker Must Die.

You would think that a couple of high school teachers would do something other than watch teen movies, set in high schools.  Nah!  You see, your typical teen movie is set in an American high school.  You know, where they have away games that are actually far away, not just across town.  Where the captain of the football/basketball/hockey team dates the head cheerleader.  Where they even have cheerleaders.  Where there's actually a place called "detention" that isn't just in the classroom of the teacher who gave you the detention.  Where ... well, I'm sure you get the point.

I don't know what it is, but this wasn't the first teen movie I've seen as an adult...and it sure won't be the last.  Some of them are pretty darn entertaining.  I end up rooting for the geek/new kid/heinous bitch (a la 10 Things I Hate About You), and you're pretty much guaranteed a happy ending.

How was the movie?  Entertaining.  Funny.  Not Oscar material by a long stretch, and I probably wouldn't add it to my DVD collection, but it was a fun way to spend the afternoon.
