I was dubious about this - RTD was behind the typewriter, and i didn't trust him - I do now.
So what happened when Donna took a job down the road instead at H C Clements? Well, the Trickster gets the Doctor and the world ends in a blaze of hell. A parallel existance worked around the new life for Donna Noble, but someone knows there is something wrong - Miss Rose Tyler.
You'd have thought that this episode centred around Rose and her return, but lets face it Rose's appearance pales next to Donna existance in this episode as Catherine Tate proves that she and her family can hold an episode without David Tennants imput. In fact, I would go as far to say that each of the companions have held there own without the imput of the Doctor. Billie pulled a brilliant performance out of the hat for The Christmas Invasion and Freema finally got a chance to shine in Human Nature/The Family of Blood.
Tate nails as Donna, showing the Post and Pre Doctor Donna to full effect. While Billie just picks up where she left of in Doomsday - able to carry the Doctor's voice with outstanding confidence. It's was commented on in Doomsday when she is taunting the Cult of Skaro that she sounded like the Doctor, and once again, she does that here. Telling Donna that she doesn't know what is on her back with a trademark grin and also saying she doesn't know whether sending Donna back will even work.
It kinda felt like BtVS at this point, where at the end, Giles believes there is a better life in place of what they have, and Donna believes that same thing. However, I think there is tradegy on the edge here for our flame haired companion - but if there is, lets hope she does it with a slap and bang after a big hug from Rose - who I think will become great allies over the course of this finale.
To finish off - David Tennants performance at the end (and BTW it wasn't even his hand in that shot in Alt Donna World(hey cool - Pete's World and Alt Donna's World)). We've been buliding up to this for weeks, from FoP when Lucius informs us that 'She is Returning'. The Doctor's urgency to understand who is returning is amazing and to here Donna utter the words 'Bad Wolf'. I was squeeing - can you imagine what our good Doctor, who owes this current regeneration to those words must be thinking?
If the mid series trailer is anything to go by, the Doctor will be filling Donna in on Bad Wolf and Rose Tyler. Although, this could be a red herring as the brilliant 'I am not the Doctor' scene was in the series three trailer, but not in the episode.
Now, next week. That trailer - omg!! Rose, the Doctor, Donna, Martha, Gwen, Ianto, Jack, Sarah Jane, Luke, Maria, Clyde, Daleks, Judoon!!! It is fan wank heaven and many early reviews tell us that we will be scrapping the squee off the walls. It's gonna be bloody epic. Although, I was disappointed at the lack of Mickey and Jackie, but ho hum.
And I just knew that Rose's main return would feature about the Trickster - i wrote a fic and everything.
