Dear Ben,
Hope your week has gone well!
Calgary has been in a flurry of repair this week. City officials are confident that the Calgary Stampede will be a go. While I understand that the City's massive money maker is important, I can't help but think that the efforts they are putting into the Saddledome could be better utilized helping residents. We are what makes the City are we not? Having said that, the City needs the revenue after the huge flood we had.
I was in Stanley Park today. The damage is pretty devastating. The park's main building may have to be torn down and volunteers were in the process of gutting the pool building. A pump was taking the brown brackish water out of the actual pool area. The water line on the pool building was literally up to my eyeballs. I can't imagine that much water. There was mud up into the trees, on the trails. Across the river you could see a large outbuilding toppled over and the houses must have been destroyed inside. Fortunately for the residents they are all wealthy and can afford the various equipment to get rid of the water. I'm not saying it's not crappy that their houses got flooded, because it is. But they can well afford the equipment to be able to save their houses whereas other people my lose them because of the mold that will inevitably grow inside the soaked walls.
The residents of High River will probably not be able to get into their houses for another week. This is terrible as it could very well lead to the demolition of a great portion of the town. If it's not already growing, the mold will come. Sounds like a weird Sci-fi movie doesn't it? But it's truth. I'm very worried about my friend's house. I had hoped that if they were let in this weekend I could go down and volunteer for the clean up.
I've been anxious to help but I have to work. And I haven't got home before 9 pm all week. Understand, I start quite early in the morning so it ends up that I'm very tired when I come home. I've mostly been out and about all evening so it's not like I'm working all evening. It's still exhausting.
I went to a cooking class tonight. It was alright. My co-worker and I were in charge of salad and the chicken. It turned out well and I'm looking forward to making the recipes on my own. Something for a Sunday brunch. I also bought a creme brulee torch while I was there and a bottle of sake. Sake for obvious reasons but I'm not sure why I got the torch. I've wanted one but don't really need it. Oh well, done now.
Looking forward to LA...wish it was September! And I wish it was October as well for New Orleans. I must be patient. Because it's not going to come any faster than time allows. :)
I'm going to the doctor tomorrow for my knee. I've injured it which is quite inconvenient :) Got to love sports injuries! Better than any other I guess.
Well, I'm tired. Must be going!
