Oh Christmas Tree
“That was nice, thank you,” Chacha stood on tiptoe to kiss Ju-ken.
“My pleasure,” Ju-ken smiled as he unlocked the door.
The two men stepped into the foyer, toed off their shoes, and hung up their coats. As they walked into the living room Ju-ken accidentally kicked something that rolled away.
“What…?”
“Oh, no!” Chacha murmured.
Both men looked around at all the Christmas ornaments laying on the floor. Then they spied Eneru wrapped up in the “snow” under the tree sound asleep with a ribbon dipping down over his nose.
“Aww,” Chacha said, “he looks like a little present.” Then his eyes travelled up.
Illuminated only by the twinkling tree lights, Kamui and Yu were barely visible, tucked neatly into the branches.
Ju-ken chuckled. “Guess they thought the tree wasn’t done yet.”
Chacha closed his eyes in exasperation. “Kamui, Yu.” He kicked some more ornaments out of his way as he made his way to grab the cats out of the tree.
Ju-ken held his arm. “Don’t be mad at them,” he said as he gingerly pried Kamui from his perch in the tree. “You didn’t mean it, did you big boy,” he murmured, stroking Kamui’s silky head.
“Yes, I did,” Kamui answered.
“Aw, Yu, how did you get up there without hurting yourself?” Chacha wondered. “You know you’re not really the best at climbing any more.”
Yu didn’t say anything, just purred as Chacha set him down on the floor, and he snuggled into the “snow” with Eneru. He wouldn’t admit to anyone that he’d been damn uncomfortable, but didn’t know how to get down.
Kamui walked over to him and started washing his ears. “You ok?”
“Yeah. You?”
“Yeah.” Kamui curled up beside Yu. He would never admit he couldn’t get down from the tree by himself and was hoping Dad and Ju-ken would hurry up and come home.
Chacha and Ju-ken picked up the scattered ornaments and put them back on the tree. Then they sat together on the couch, feet propped up on the coffee table and enjoyed the twinkling tree.
Ju-ken wrapped his arm around Chacha and pulled him close. Chacha rested his head against Ju-ken’s arm.
“Well,” Ju-ken said, “now I know why you insisted on unbreakable ornaments and tying the tree so securely.”
