Oh Christmas Tree
Kamui watched the door close behind the two men. “Ok, guys, they’re gone.”
Yu and Eneru walked into the living room and sat beside the sleek black tuxedo cat to admire the tree.
“It’s pretty, isn’t it,” Yu said, watching the twinkling lights and trying to resist the urge to go attack them.
“Yeah, but it’s missing something,” Kamui narrowed his eyes as he studied the tree. Then he launched himself across the room and into the tree, climbing through the branches to get as close as he could to the top without falling out.
Christmas balls dropped and bounced across the floor.
Eneru perked up at the sound of the clattering decorations and began chasing after the falling balls. “Do it again, Kamui!” he yipped happily, “do it again!”
Kamui pushed a few more ornaments out of his way and made himself comfortable. “Now it’s perfect,” he declared. “Hey, Yu, come on up.”
But Yu was busy staring at a bright light that was reflecting off a sparkly silver ornament, taunting him. He launched himself into the tree and knocked the offending ball to the floor, then curled himself over a couple of branches and got comfortable. “You were wrong before, Kamui,” he said. “Now it’s perfect.”
Kamui looked down at his gray-striped friend. He reached down and tapped the tip of Yu’s ear with his paw. “Yeah, it is,” he purred.
Eneru ran over and began jumping at the base of the tree, which began to shake precariously. “Hey guys, what about me?”
“No, Enetan!” Kamui answered as he latched onto the branches and light strings with his claws to keep himself from falling. “You can’t climb trees.”
“But I want to be an ornament, too,” the puppy pouted.
“Enetan,” Yu said gently to calm the puppy, “you can be the present tucked under the tree.”
“Oh, ok.” Eneru turned round and round in the snow-like fabric wrapped around the base of the tree, and snuggled in.
Yu knocked a ribbon off the branch in front of him that landed on the puppy’s head.
“Thanks, Yu,” he yipped happily. “Look at me, I’m a present!”
