Warning: You're in a cigar store

Jun 24, 2009 18:07

You know, there's another round of debates on fic warnings and I have absolutely nothing to add to it because I actually have an entry I wrote the last time it was talked about. And my opinion hasn't changed at all. In short: If you have an aversion to adding warnings to fics for spoiler reasons, at least add highlightable warnings for the sake of your readers who actually enjoy and want warnings (like me). There's no reason not to do that.

Anyway, I've been reading around on stuff regarding the recent rape discussions. I gotta say, I find myself boggled by the people who will go onto posts that discuss individual instances of sexism women have experienced and dismiss them as "not sexism". Typically because they are attributed to non-gendered harassment and therefore not motivated by any underlying sexist attitudes. I suppose that's the "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar" argument. And, yeah, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. And sometimes you're standing in a fucking cigar store surrounded by cigars. So, yes, you will raise an eyebrow at the person trying to convince you that, no, these cigars are just coincidentally lying around with no particular reason behind their presence. Course, then it all makes sense when you realize this particular person owns stock in the cigar store and has a vested interest in their denial.

Moving on, just providing some links I've come across that I've found nifty. Some are direct responses to cereta's original post. Others are older LJ posts that are fairly relevant. And, just to confuse you, one non-LJ link.
