From One Vault to Another
“Stevens, you’re still here?”
She turned, startled, yet not. She knew someone would eventually come, she just didn’t think it would be him. “Dr. Burke.” She quickly wiped away the tears that had been cascading silently down her cheeks, surgeons weren’t supposed to be weak. She felt weak. “How-how are you?” A raised eyebrow and a resigned tilt of his head answered that question and she cringed inwardly at her own stupidity. “Of course I know you’re not- I, mean things must be… with everything…”
She paused. “Are you looking for Christina?” Burke heard that slightly hopeful note and the end of her voice and wished he could say yes, but he wouldn’t lie. He had tried. He had tried to lie to himself, Christina would be happy, they would be happy, but he couldn’t. The words turned to ash in his mouth.
“Because she’s not here.” Izzie continued not looking at him, if she didn’t look at him then she wouldn’t have to know and maybe it would be okay, maybe then at least someone would get the fairytale. “I think she went home but I could call Mer and check or I could go and get her or maybe Meredith could drive her here or I could just-“
“Stevens.” He interrupted and Izzie was forced to look at him, there was too much truth there to ignore. “I knew she wouldn’t still be here” He gestured to the pew and when she made no ill gestures settled himself on the bench. “Christina isn’t the type to linger when things end.”
“So then it’s, I mean, it’s really over?”
He hated that, the hope, the reality, the dreams dissolved. “Yes, it’s over.” There was no relief in his voice, no remorse, only facts harsh and brutal in the light of day.
She nodded, blonde head bobbing in understanding that she didn’t want. She didn’t want to know this, none of this. She wanted to witness a fairytale come true, not this, an empty church and vacant voice.
“It wouldn’t have worked.” Preston continued. “I wanted her to be something else. I pushed and she pulled away.”
“But she was here. She was here.” Izzie repeated, emotions rising in her voice, decibels sliding upward. “She laid her heart out for you and she came. She was here, she waited, and you never came. She waited.”
Burke sat for a moment, letting her words settle. “You gave him a choice?” Izzie’s set jaw gave him the only answer he needed. “And he gave you his answer.”
“I thought-“ She swallowed, hard. “He was supposed to meet me here. I thought, I thought he loved me. I told him that I was in love with him. I thought he was too.”
Burke breathed deeply. He knew he could tell her, tell her about George and his question about loving two people. He could tell her about duty and honor, and letting go when you want to hold on. He could tell her that he loved Christina, was in love with Christina, but he didn’t know how to explain why that didn’t matter. It didn’t change anything. It should have but it didn’t. So he just continued to sit next to her.
“It’s really beautiful here.” He mused after a moment’s silence.
“Yeah.” She looked around the church, people had made it work, people had had their happily ever afters here. “Yeah, it really is.”
He rose. “Are you coming?”
She shook her head. “I think I will stay a little longer” And she thought maybe, just maybe, if she sat long enough she would get her happily ever after.
