With all the talk about ailing cars, new cars, car images, street cred.. I should take a moment to give a little airtime to my esteemed rental car. I love cars, and any and all cars are points of interest.

A friend was in a minor accident recently and she too has a rental. Here's an excerpt from a recent exchange:

"You won't believe what I got. A Jeep Liberty. At first I loathed the car because of my SUV Jihadist past, but I must admit that it's grown on me. For one, any car that I *know* will start and behave is a good car to me at this point, and I must admit that the power is very nice, as is the ability to drive over the crappy dallas streets with impunity. No worry about alignments or anything, this thing can clearly take it. On the downside the thing is no sports car, and I've frequently made the tires squeal on what I would consider "normal" turning speeds.

It has a radio! And a CD player! (mine were stolen as you might remember). Of course.. no burner here at the house, so that means no CDs, but I still have radio. So I could only laugh when I turned it on finally and got...

THE NPR PLEDGE DRIVE!!! Why, oh God? The timing in my life hasn't been the greatest recently."

I have to be honest in that I can definitely see the appeal of an SUV. I was honest about it when we once ended up with a Ford Expedition (in SF no less), easily the most hated of all vehicles.
