DANGEROUS SPOILERS AHEAD!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!
The ride back from the airport was peppered with silence. Penny was still hung over, Leonard wasn’t in high spirits, and Sheldon, understandably, was in a foul mood. Penny couldn’t blame him. Heck, she had no right to blame him. It had been her damn fault for being so stupid.
She shouldn’t have gotten herself drunk, she moaned to herself. No, she shouldn’t have gotten Beverly drunk! Maybe then she wouldn’t have had to see her lay one on Sheldon. Sheldon! Poor little neurotic, germaphobe Sheldon, kissed out of the blue by his roommate’s mother!
“Oh dear God,” Penny groaned. “I think I’m gonna hurl…”
“And that’s no one else’s fault but yours,” Sheldon quipped from the passenger seat, turning his head to once again, throw a glare at Penny. She started to glare back, but felt herself deflate. Yes, it was her fault. She couldn’t worm her way out of this one.
“I’m so, so sorry, Sheldon…” Penny muttered meekly as Leonard pulled the car into the apartment’s driveway. “I never meant…never expected…”
“Why do you keep on apologizing to Sheldon for getting yourself and my mother drunk?” Leonard asked, his voice picking up a notch as he stepped out of the car. “If anything, you should be apologizing to me.”
“I’m sorry,” Penny muttered again, though this time, she wasn’t sure to whom. Her head was really killing her, and it wasn’t until she had stepped away from the car that she realized it was Sheldon who had opened the door for her.
Sheldon was only too quick to step away once he had shut the car door. “If you will both excuse me, I have certain matters to attend to…like perhaps scouting the internet for the best psychiatrists who could rid the demons recently introduced to me as a result of someone else’s inebriation.”
He’d once again, glared at Penny as he said this before storming into the apartment, his strides thunderous against the pathway.
Penny felt herself shrink. It wasn’t the first time she had made a blunder against Sheldon, but this was the first time she had ever felt truly sorry about it. Their cushion fight the year before was nothing compared to this.
“Was…uhm…Sheldon being sarcastic?”
Penny looked up to see Leonard’s frown. She had almost forgotten he was there…and it was scary, how often that was happening. “To tell you the truth, I’m not even sure. What I do know is I have a splitting headache.” She made a show of pushing the heel of her palm against her temple. The pain was subsiding, but she needed an excuse to hide out in her room. “I think I’ll turn in early for the night. Good night, Leonard.”
She didn’t bother to wait for him to catch up as she hurried into the apartment.
11:54PM
Penny tossed and turned in bed, still unable to sleep. Her conscience was pricking her, but she hadn’t been brave enough to try and apologize to Sheldon again, especially since he had shown no indication he would be forgiving her anytime soon.
She tried turning to her left side again, but the moment she saw the small space at her bedside, she felt memories hit her like a slap to the face. She saw Sheldon, looking up at her from this very bed, asking her to sing ‘Soft Kitty’ to him. She saw herself, lying on this same spot, and from what she could recall even from her drugged stupor, him, sitting on her bedside and singing ‘Soft Kitty’ in rounds with her, a sweet, child-like smile lighting his lips as he sang.
But that innocence was gone, now…taken ruthlessly away, and she was suddenly afraid their friendship would be falling down the same, bottomless pit.
Groping in the dark and turning on her bedside lamp, she reached for her cell phone and began to text.
Sheldon, m so, so sori. Pls 4giv me. Wil do anything 2 make it up 2 u. Promis.
Penny bit her lip as her thumb hovered over the button. She knew she’ll be digging her own grave with this promise, but this was all her fault. She had to do something to make it up to him.
She couldn’t lose Sheldon.
“Huh,” Penny muttered at the thought as she pushed the button to send. She wasn’t sure as to what context she was implying about not losing Sheldon…or maybe it’s just the hangover talking.
After a moment, she slipped her cell phone back on the bedside table and flopped back on her pillows. Sheldon was probably already asleep, and won’t be reading the text until tomorrow morning.
Yeah, sending him a text while he was asleep. How wonderfully brave.
Then, she heard it: the unmistakable triple knock, followed by a whispered, yet stern “Penny”.
She scrambled out of bed, put on her bathrobe and waited for him to finish before opening the door. “Sheldon.”
He was wearing a green, checkered bathrobe, and the coldest look she had ever seen on him. The dark circles under his eyes told more than enough about his mood.
“Sheldon, I’m really sorry if the text woke you up, but I thought you were asleep-”
“I wasn’t,” Sheldon interjected and stepped inside without an invitation. Penny slowly closed the door and faced him. So much for going the coward’s way when the dragon finds his way to your fortress, she thought. “However, I did come to discuss about your constant apologies, including your earlier text message. I have received no less than seven admissions of guilt from you, but it’s not enough, considering what has been done.”
“Look, Sheldon, I’ll make it up to you, I swear,” Penny pleaded, looking up at him with the most pitiful look she could muster but his face was stone and disgusted-like when Beverly kissed him. Oh God, that was sooo her fault!
“Unless you can travel back through time, there’s no possible way you can change the course of events,” Sheldon fired. “Do you have any idea as to the ramifications of your actions? How it has ruined the plans I had so carefully laid out?”
“Ruined your…sweetie, I-”
“That was my first kiss, Penny,” Sheldon roared, throwing his hands in the air and stunning Penny into silence. “And it wasn’t as I planned it. You’ve ruined everything. It’s all your fault!”
Penny felt her shoulders quiver, and her eyes begin to water. She had no defense against this. Sheldon was only too right. “Sheldon, I-”
She felt the breath stolen from her. Not from guilt this time. Not from the sudden onslaught of sobs, but from Sheldon, suddenly pulling her into his arms and capturing her slightly parted lips with his mouth.
Penny was in too much shock to struggle or even squeak. Sheldon was still kissing her, nibbling softly on her lower lip while slowly changing the angle of his face, their noses bumping as his hands rose from her waist and brushed against the sides of her breasts.
It all came flooding back to her-Sheldon, accidentally cupping her breast as he dressed her, and the strange feelings which overwhelmed her into losing the instinct of pushing him away; Sheldon, admitting he’d peeked at her; Sheldon, seeing her in the bathtub and his nervous ‘hello’; Sheldon, looking as though he wanted desperately to touch her if not for her injury; Sheldon, looking into her eyes as he sang to her.
It wasn’t until he broke the kiss that Penny responded, but by then he had already pulled his face away, and his hands had dropped back to her waist.
It took moments for Penny to be coherent. “What…was…that?”
“That,” Sheldon punctuated the word into the air, “was not supposed to happen until the very distant future.” He dropped his voice to a murmur, his tone not so much of bitterness than resignation when he added, “And that’s all your fault too.”
THE END
Yup. That's the end. Sorry guys, but I'll try to make it up to you through this photo manip here :D
Sheldon and Penny through the years. I chose these particular sequence of images because...well, the check engine light and Soft Kitty have become they're 'things'. And notice how in 2007-2009, all are with Penny at the helm (either driving or singing Soft Kitty) and are all from different episodes but in 2009, we see both in a single episode, this time, with Sheldon at the helm. Say it with me: awwwww! Makes you hopeful for 2010, doesn't it? Shenelope for the win!
