Such a welcome weekend begins as soon as I'm out of here...

Got home good and late last night, and I didn't want to do anything but read and eat dinner. Going to bed early would have been nice, too, but between reading until 10pm before venturing to the kitchen to get my dinner and then falling asleep with the lights on at some point past 11pm, not so much. At least I'd tended to the rabbits and put them away before crashing -- I was even half-undressed, since I was just catching up on Twitter links before brushing my teeth. So I don't have anything really planned for tonight but trying to avoid another night with the lights on.

Koalas Have Human-like Fingerprints -- "A crime in a zoo's koala cage would probably confound the efforts of even the best detectives. Why? Because koalas, doll-sized marsupials that climb trees with babies on their backs, have fingerprints that are almost identical to human ones. Not even careful analysis under a microscope can easily distinguish the loopy, whirling ridges on koalas' fingers from our own. Koalas aren't the only non-humans with fingerprints: Close human relatives such as chimps and gorillas have them as well. The remarkable thing about koala prints is that they seem to have evolved independently. On the evolutionary tree of life, primates and modern koalas' marsupial ancestors branched apart 70 million years ago. Scientists think the koala's fingertip features developed much more recently in its evolutionary history, because most of its close relatives (such as wombats and kangaroos) lack them."

House GOP Unanimously Passes Anti-Abortion Bill That Redefines Rape, Raises Taxes, And Creates Rape Audits -- "In a 251 to 175 vote this evening, 16 anti-choice Democrats joined every House Republican present in passing H.R. 3, the No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion Act. A chief weapon in the House GOP’s 'comprehensive assault' on women this bill proposes some of the most radical and draconian restrictions on women’s rights."

The GOP's Stealth Plan to Redefine Rape -- "Why would Republicans try to sneak in this language? A look at the history of H.R. 3 provides some potential answers. Both Richard Doerflinger of the US Council of Catholic Bishops and the NRLC's Johnson, arguably the two most influential anti-abortion lobbyists on Capitol Hill, have offered the same explanation for why the 'forcible rape' language was originally introduced: Johnson said it was intended to fend off a 'brazen effort,' by abortion rights groups to exploit the rape exception in Hyde. Abortion rights groups were, in Johnson's words, planning to 'federally fund the abortion of tens of thousands of healthy babies of healthy moms, based solely on the age of their mothers.' Doerflinger argued in congressional testimony that the language was 'an effort on the part of the sponsors to prevent the opening of a very broad loophole for federally funded abortions for any teenager.'"

So with Yahoo! having sold Delicious to AVOS, not only can I log into Delicious again without having to make some extra clicks to log in using my Yahoo! account, but there's a good chance it'll work with my Blackberry again. I went into the App World application to reinstall the app and it wasn't listed in my uninstalled apps, so I searched and pulled up an official app for $5.99. Um, no, I already bought it. So I dug around in my webmail inbox and managed to find the e-mail I'd been sent linking to the apps purchased in that particular order, and now I've downloaded and reinstalled it. And this is why I make a special point of not deleting order confirmations that come with download links...

And I've been running a bit late most mornings this week, which may in part be down to extra time spent dealing with bunnies. But then again, maybe not: Yesterday Marvin got himself back to the cage when I topped up the hay and added a handful of pellets (though I had to catch Willow and carry her back, much to her distress), and this morning, between my refilling the hay and returning from putting away the hay-basket to add a handful or two of pellets, both rabbits had returned to the cage of their own accord. They're smart enough to figure out the drill if the morning routine starts being a half-hour of playtime followed by restocked munchies and a return to the cage for the day, and willing to be bribed by pellets -- I just hope they don't get too confused by being left loose until Mom gets up on her Tuesdays home from work. (To say nothing of weekends, when I may not appear to let them out until the early afternoon.) And I need another week or so to get my own habits reset -- used to be I'd appear, open the second-level door to pet the bunnies and give them their pellets, and then top up hay and check the water bowl when I was about to head out the door for work. Monday I let them out first thing and completely forgot to give them any pellets before leaving, which I'm sure annoyed them greatly. (At least I'm already used to luring them back to the cage with food -- I used to give Marvin his salad when I fed the cats after work, but when I brought Willow home and they were being kept separated during the bonding process, I gave them their salad after their evening playtime, when I'd caged one and was topping up hay and water as well. Now they're used to salad being put in the cage at bedtime and I don't have to chase Willow to put her away when I'm going to bed -- I just rattle the bag as I bring it in from the kitchen, while chirping, "Salad! Salad!" at them.)

Due to a set of links I probably started down because of a bunnyowners post, I wound up at The House of Rabbit, being a somewhat out-of-date site depicting a group of thirteen bunnies living under one roof, divided into five "clans" of two to four bonded rabbits. There are some missing links to stories of some of the bunnies, and a few sad stories of the condition a couple of the rabbits were in when they reached these people's care, but some adorable pictures too.

US on track for most measles cases in a decade -- "The United States seems to be on track to have more measles cases than any year in more than a decade, with virtually all cases linked to other countries, including Europe where there's a big outbreak. Already there have been 89 cases reported so far. The U.S. normally sees only about 50 cases of measles in a year thanks to vaccinations."

Right, I need to be winding things up so I can leave. And hit the liquor store on the way home... (Mom wants me to bring her home a bottle of vodka, since I vetoed her first choice on the grounds that I don't drink tequila but I will drink vodka.)
