A reasonable weekend, albeit heavily skewed towards lace knitting and my first Stitch N Bitch meeting for probably a couple of months -- there were a few things I needed to do that I didn't and another (mowing the lawn) that I didn't quite finish due to forces beyond my control. Namely, the guy driving past who saw me out front with the mower and pulled up to the house to come personally hand me his business card advertising his lawn care services. I cut the engine to be polite while he was talking to me, but I couldn't get it started again afterwards, even when Mom came out to help. We're used to the mower being tricky to start -- especially for the first mowing or two of the season -- but this was at least the third or fourth mowing this spring and it's never been an issue getting it restarted after it's been running already that day. Well, never before a mowing or two back when I ran out of gas, refueled, and couldn't get it started again -- and for that matter we needed to get Stephen out there to get it started yesterday so I could start mowing. He was of course no longer at the house when it needed restarting. Since I was down to just half the front yard needing cutting I was quite happy to let things slide till next weekend. (Especially since I wound up having just enough time for a fast shower to get the dirt and sweat off before Deadwood.)
No progress photos on the knitting this weekend, since the bulk of my time went to the shawl and I'm maybe five or six rows (plus a longassed bindoff) away from being done with it. A few evenings this week knocking out those rows and I anticipate blocking it Saturday. And I should also be able to get the last few inches of Dad's boot sock so I can give him those on Father's Day -- certainly on Saturday, if not before. Which means I need to be ready to start the next project or three...
Not the best of starts to the day today, though, since I made the mistake of not taking something for my incipient headache before bed last night and woke up with it this morning. At least I did hit the gym.
And over to Yahoo!:
"A black bear picked the wrong yard for a jaunt, running into a territorial tabby who ran the furry beast up a tree - twice." "The doctor who first suggested a link between the MMR vaccine and autism is to be charged with serious professional misconduct, it is reported." Way back when, I think I passed on a link to the story about the teen-repelling sounds being used to prevent gangs from congregating in certain places. Well, now the sounds too high-pitched for adults to hear are being repurposed:
"Students are using a new ring tone to receive messages in class -- and many teachers can't even hear the ring." sclerotic_rings passed along the Smithsonian Magazine piece on
what happened when scientists experienced with breeding endangered species were allowed access to pandas. Basically, the recent teamwork between American zoo scientists and Chinese panda specialists has caused a dramatic turnaround in the captive breeding success rate.
Mmm, linkhopping from
metafandom, which pointed me to a post with multiple good links, a few of which I share:
On the appeal of serial storytelling and the advantages of TV in allowing for same, and another piece on
made-up profanity in sci-fi, especially in BSG and Firefly, that itself links to a wiki page on
fake cuss words.
sclerotic_rings passed along a pair of links in his entry about
the publicity surrounding the looting of a carved stone box from a recently-discovered Mayan tomb that just led to its anonymous return, but I point to the entry itself for
srallen's commentary on SR's crack about the buyer assuming a Guatemalan museum had been having an overstock sale: "'That's right, folks! Qrazy Quetzalcoatl says everything must go, so we've been slashing our prices with a bloodlust! We've got jade, gold, turquoise and wait'll you see what we've got for you over here. Your very own Mayan funerary mural, it'll look great in your bathroom. Ordinarily we'd price this for $15,000 but, uh oh, y'hear that rumbling? Price-bustin' Tlaloc sez it can be yours for *KABAM!* $7,500!'"
For those of you as happy as I am that Deadwood is back to lead us through the summer with new episodes,
wrong_questions posted a nice bit of meta on
a wish list for the new season. Links are included to discussions of the first two seasons (
one and
two), which are worth checking out if you're not sure if you want to put this on your Netflix queue. Because it is glorious.
Oh, excellent! Nicely late in the day, and I'm not at all caught up with LJ. So there's something to read tomorrow. Meanwhile, I shall post this shit. Comment replies shall wait for tomorrow or whenever, since I recall there being at least a couple requiring actual thought and further expansion of last week's meta rant.
And the headache seems gone, which bodes well for my evening plans.
