In Listening to the Doctor Who Soundtrack.....

I realized what I think I missed most was both Moffat's subtly and perhaps more than anything the Doctor's humanity.

....or maybe just angst.

....

Now I'm not saying I exactly thrive on angst or anything and the specials are so angsty I can barely rewatch them. But as the fall passes on, I can't help think that when I consider rewatching Who? There isn't a single episode from Series Five I want to rewatch. Siularians were "okay" and no matter how much I do/use to like River- part of what I LOVED about river in Series four is her mystery, her tragedy, and now... I still enjoy her but I ignore her more recent eppys and go right back to SOTL.

You listen to the music and you hear that "epic" feeling. You can remember going on the adventures, holding your breath, waiting for the next turn, and the underlying pain of it all.

The Doctor may try to have a good time, but you never forgot he was the adult, he was older, and as young as Rose was or as infatuated as Martha could be or as good of a friend as Donna could be- the doctor made mistakes and they were wrong, but that was part of his "humanity." What made him different then just time lords or the master or other aliens who see themselves as higher beings.

Now... the recent series?

I don't know... I listen to the music and I don't get that feeling. Amy's young, but the Doctor's become reckless. I'm happy its less angsty, but I also don't buy it.

Tennant was happy when he started off with Rose, but there was always some sort of emotion underlaying wrecklessnes since the show started back up First it was the time war, then it was love for Rose, then it was the loss of Rose, then it was the loss of Martha and Rose and the Master, then it was everything else... and then? He loses everything, is proved wrong, goes really angsty, nad comes back...

And while this Doctor pats Amy... well... honestly he's very one sided with occasional anger.

True Matt is a young actor, whereas Tennant and Eccleston are both seen as excellent actors in their other works and have more experience...

But it makes it hard to have an episode that leaves you hanging if the main character doen't seem to have anything... earth shattering.

I was like NOOOOO during the whole Rory thing, but it didn't rip out my emotions and screw with them.

For a younger audience? I bet my bucks yeah... but I'm curious how many of their older viewers are like me and go... hmmm. 'Cause while the Doctor's fun in games, I enjoy it most because it reminds you sometimes you have to put it aside and face your problems and things don't always end with a smile.

the doctor, matt, rtd, moffat, tennant, season 4, doctor who, river song, season 5
