Prologue

Chapter 1
Tatsuya had been in bed sick for a couple weeks and by the time he had recovered there were a few new knights at his father’s table. It was the time of year where his father, the legendary great battle commander, received the most pledges from men hoping to become knights or something of the like and a few that already were knights. He envied them greatly, but he did not show it, he knew better than that. He wished he had an older brother, instead of a sister, then he wouldn’t have to deal with learning everything about being a lord from his father and could spend more time with their master-at-arms to learn how to fight like a knight, not that he didn’t already receive daily lessons.

He quietly ate his dinner as he secretly checked out the new men. They didn’t seem like much. They were young men, unseasoned in battle. There were three in total and only one of them actually looked the part. Of the other two, one was a bit too short with a slight scowl on his face, nothing too knightly about him except for his comely looks, and the other one was a bit too fat and seemed more like a child than a brave and valient knight, but hopefully they would be able to fight better than they looked. The thing he hated more than anything was knights who failed in battle because he knew he could do so much better than them if given the chance. After dinner was done, his father’s men retreated off to whatever they’d like, while Tatsuya was stuck following his father to help him learn what a lord does.

Tatsuya woke up to the sound of practice swords hitting against each other as the men got in a bit of morning practice before breakfast. Tatsuya forced himself not to look as he hurriedly got dressed and made his way to his morning lessons, since he was already a bit late and Master Hideaki hates it when he’s late.

After all his hurrying, he arrived at Master Hideaki’s ten minutes late and was greatly scolded for it. As punishment, he would have to go without breakfast and his lessons would be extended an hour which cut greatly into the time he would be able to practice with their master-at-arms that afternoon.

When his lessons finally finished, he was beyond starving, so he made his way to the kitchens for a quick lunch before practice with the master-at-arms. He grabbed a slice of bread, cheese, and meat and brought them out to the yard so that Tatsuya could watch the other men practice before he set off to do so himself.

Sitting out in the yard, he watched as the short knight and the fat knight fought. They both did a lot better than he had originally thought they would which goes to show you can’t judge a book by its cover. The fat one seemed to be a bit better than average, but looked horrible in comparison to the short man he was fighting. The shorter man was graceful, fast, cunning, and brave. There was no doubt in anyone’s mind who was going to win.

Seeing some men watching the fight, Tatsuya made his way over to them in hopes of finding out a bit more about this new knight. “Excuse me; do you know who those men are?”

“Oh Tatsuya!” The men gave a short bow as they saw who it was addressing them before the one standing further from him answered. “Yeah, they’re from the south.”

“The south?” Tatsuya interrupted the man due to his surprise at the men’s origin. “We don’t get many men from the south traveling all the way up here.”

“Yeah, apparently, the short one is the second son of Lord Ichiro. They supposedly never really got along, so he made his way all the way up to swear fealty to your father in hopes of getting away from his father. The other two are knights his father sent with him to help guard him on the trip up here, although it doesn’t really seem like he needs it, does it?” The other man grunted in agreement, while Tatsuya continued watching the battle, lost in his own thoughts.

Lord Ichiro of House Nishikido from Nymeria in the south had visited once before with his family. Tatsuya had been too young to remember much of it, but he still knew about Lord Ichiro. He was a rich lord of the south, known for serious behavior and lack of any warm emotions. He was a feared and just battle commander, but he was not well loved like Lord Hitoshi Ueda. Lord Ichiro had three sons and a daughter. The eldest son, the one who was going to take the title of lord, was a few years older than Tatsuya, while the second son, the one who just one his fight with the fat knight, was a year younger than him. Other than that, Tatsuya could not remember a thing about the man who was currently in front of him, which kind of made him wish he paid more attention to his lessons. He knew everything about the Northern lords and the Western lords, where his mother was from, but he knew very little about the Southern and Eastern lords, since he had never really met that many. His father was the one who went south to go meet there lords, since not many wanted to come to the cold desolate place that was the North.
The knights put away their practices swords and walked away from the yard to presumably get something for lunch. With the knights, everyone who was watching the fight went back to work, including Tatsuya who snapped out of his thoughts and made his over to the master-at-arms for some sword practice.

Sword practice was over way too quickly in Tatsuya’s opinion, for it seemed like it was over just as soon as it started. But what really made Tatsuya depressed was that the knights from before did not come back to continue practicing like he had hoped. Instead, Tatsuya had to make his way across the yard to sit in on his father’s work with disappointment filling his heart.

Unbeknownst to Tatsuya though, two pairs of eyes watched him as he made his way towards his father, neither of them with the purest of intentions.

A/N:So, a new series...I don't really like the way I wrote, but I hope you liked it better. The next chapter should hopefully be up by tomorrow since I've already wrote it, I just need to look over it. As for my other two series, I'm kind of stuck as to how to write the next parts, but hopefully I'll be able to put up the next chapters for those soon as well, but school started a couple weeks ago, so I have less time to spend on them. Anyways, please tell me what you think. Thanks for reading/commenting!!
