Eck. BUSY. I just got set my first history essay... I have to do a book review, but I'm not actually allowed to talk about the book (!??!?!) Basically I have to read a book - I've picked A History of Nationalism in Modern Japan (-______-); - and then write a 6 page essay on what kind of questions it raises and so on... Not what's actually IN the book, because, as Kushner pointed out, the book already says that. Geck DD: I can tell already that I fail at this. I haven't even read the book yet and the essay is due in a fortnight. It's ridiculous.
But anyways, apart from that work-related stress, things are going well so far :DD I've been on 3 LGBT formal swaps, where the Team Gay from one college go to another college and have formal with their Team Gay. Our SelGBT (we're cool) is so awesome so I love going, even though most of the people are guys. For some reason barely any girls ever go D: The first was at Christ's - the people were so-so but the food was awful - and they didn't even have to wear their gowns! Plus the waiters weren't in black tie, which they are at Selwyn formal! It was very sloppy. I tried to be tactful but then Fergus got drunk and told them all how shit their formal was, which was amusing XDDD Then we went to Gonville and Caius and the people were SO NICE (formal itself was still a bit shit) but I had a great time that evening! :DD Simon (fellow gay Selwyn Japanologist) came that time and we ended up getting dragged to Life (the gay club) by Bryn and Nick. It was... interesting? Or sleazy. Yeah, pretty much sleazy. I think my expectations were ridiculously high because of watching too much Queer as Folk XDDD Simon and I basically sat together and talked for most of it - a guy and a girl sitting alone together on gay night, way to rebel against the system XDD; and left fairly early. The third swap was Sidney Sussex coming to Selwyn, but only 3 turned up and I didn't meet any of them because I went to family formal on the same night (with my college family, not my real family...) Basically I just spent the entire night talking to Sven (other fellow gay Selwyn Japanologist) about random nonsense XDD
Saturday morning Sven and Chloe and I went Chinese food shopping~!!! (^w^) I didn't realise but there's LOADS of Chinese supermarkets in Cambridge, although they're a fair way from Selwyn! Anyways, we bought pocky and mochi <333 and SQUID which is my favourite favourite food! We then made squid tenpura and curry udon for Simon the next night, because we decided to have a (Gay) Selwyn Japanologist Dinner. It was so awesome. We made such a mess, it was unbelievable. When Simon walked in I was busy absorbing the excess moisture from the squid with Kleenexes XDXD; But it all worked out fine in the end, and the tenpura actually worked pretty well (surprisingly!)
And on Saturday night I went to the cinema with a group of second years to see Stardust which was actually pretty good, in a bad sort of way. It was entertaining rubbish, with an odd sense of humour. The ghosts were four hundred kinds of awesome and the pirates were good fun though XDD But boo for predictable heterosexual storylines... I think this may just be because ALL my friends here are gay men and I'm now just used to talking about their love lives (or lack thereof). Ah well.
And at the moment I'm procrastinating by a) typing this and b) FINALLY reading Stealing Harry which I've meant to read forever... Sirius and Remus isn't dead, yo... The love goes on... (;______;)
Ugh. This essay. I keep remembering I have to do it and getting cold chills (x_________x); Anyone know anything about Japanese nationalism? Anything at all would be good...
