Funimation sucks... I always knew this, but I just don't really deal with dubs... I just don't. Even when they're the ones I consider good, I'm more likely to watch the anime fansubbed. They just have easier access. (Yes, I live in Canada, so downloading anime is legal bitches. It's like a library; One person sharing with others, all for personal use only. Yes, that's how the government justified it.)
Subs also have more availability. It's legal for me to download, so why, when I'm up to, say, episode 127 in Naruto, would I wait to continue watching it if it gets licensed.
So, it gets licensed, and if the dubbing group is lucky, the subbing group drops it.
So, then it takes the dubbing group a year to dubb and basically get the product ready for the general public. Then it airs on Cartoon Network.
Oh that's right. I'm Canadian. We don't get Cartoon Network.
So then it takes another year for it to show up on YTV, if it's popular enough. Canada gets a fraction of the anime actually aired in the states.
Oh sure, I could buy it, but I'm hardly going to go from viewing it for free, to paying for it, when I could also still view it for free.
So it's on YTV, and they air 10 episodes of it. Then they re-air those 10 episodes, probably 20 times. How long do you think it's gonna take them to catch up to where I was? Yeah... just, not gonna wait. Thanks.
Anyway, I didn't ever watch Funimation, not because they suck, but simply because I don't watch them.
Then, at Sakuracon I got this little promo DVD, which has a bunch of free episodes and trailers. Pretty nice, I thought.
So, the other night I needed to kill some time, so I pop this little DVD in. It had Episode 2 of Burst Angel, and 3 of Kiddy Grade. Wow... lets give them a free episode that will only confuse them as they have just finished introducing people in the first episode. Let's not actually hook them with the fucking "hook" episode.
Not only that, but for a DVD... Correct that, the quality would have been sub-par for a fansub. For a DVD it was downright horrible.
The lines were all pixelated and rough, and any bright colors completely whited out their surroundings, which actually made the title of the episode illegible.
Good job. This really makes me want to pay for your products.
So, I figure, "screw this," and I move on to the trailers. Now, when it comes to ADVs trailers, I actually enjoy just watching them. They're like little music vidoes. They're interesting, and I like listening to the music. I think it pretty good, when people simply enjoy your commercials, as apposed to just sitting through them because you can't normally fast forward on a TV. I could skip them entirely, but I don't.
Not so with Funimation. The only trailer I didn't actually mind was the one for Gunslinger Girl.
Otherwise, I found they were boring, and their commercial like advertizing pitches made them irritating.
The one for FMA was horrible, as it gave a completely incorrect view of the show. It made it look like Scar was the main character, and that the plot revolved around his religious murders. Ed was shown briefly in the end.
Sure, almost everyone knows what FMA is about, but obviously, those people have already seen it. If you're advertizing it, you should aim the advertizement at people who have NOT seen it.
Last, but not least, my views on dubbing.
The right one, is whichever one I watch the series in. If I can watch the series in either, then that means the dubbing is excelent and the voices suit the characters.
Otherwise, it's simply a matter of the voice I'm used to.
Say your mom suddenly starts talking with a very different voice. You don't walk up to her and think, "Wow, the lyp synching is great and the actings not bad either."
You think, "What the fuck is wrong with your voice."
The 'right' voices for me, are simply the ones I'm used to. I have trouble switching from dub to sub or vice versa simply because the 'wrong' voice is so off-putting.
