MY FAMILY: *is talking about how many science fiction writers outlive their wives, do not ask why*
DAD: What about Neil Gaiman, is his wife still alive?
ME: Uh, yes, but they're divorced.
MOM: Doesn't he have a hot young girlfriend now?
ME: I think she's in her mid-late thirties, she's not that young. And I'm pretty sure they're engaged, actually.

Hey, I could promise you gay Colin Firth! It's called Mamma Mia. Granted, the gay Colin Firth proceedings are basically that one scene where he rips the other guy's wet shirt open while everyone celebrates, but what a glorious split-second it is.

I have heard of this! It is just that, as you say, it is so very brief, and A Single Man promised to be an entire movie about gay Colin Firth, so all the much more for disappointment. D:

Haven't seen the film or read the book, but know the author, who was Christopher Isherwood. (Cabaret is also based on one of his books, I am a Camera.) Since he a) was gay, b) lived in an era where it was illegal to be so for most of his life, and c) was one of the first to write about openly gay characters anyway, I think he was entitled to kill them off. It's not his fault it became a cliché afterwards!

Ah, I suppose you're right. I can at least give him kudos for showing that the characters had a happy, normal relationship before one of them died, and that the death was due neither to AIDS nor a hate crime, which is sadly pretty rare too. Gay people can die for normal reasons, why do so few people seem to get that.
