Once again, in his vision, Leto was running across the desert. The noise of the oncoming storm filled his ears, and only the voice of his father cut through the sound:
“The Golden Path. It’s up to you now. The desert storm that can’t be stopped. The whirlwind.”
He fell onto his knees on the sand floor of a large sietch cavern. From far away he heard Ghani’s voice: “Leto! Don’t!”
And then the voice of his father again: “The Golden Path is dangerous. The Path I could not take.”
Leto dug his fingers into the sand and felt the sandtrout stretch along his skin, the way Fremen children used to play with them.
“Leto.” Ghanima touched his hand, and he was back on the cliff above Sietch Tabr
“You were having another vision, weren’t you?”
He didn’t need to answer that question. “Events are moving faster than we anticipated, Ghani. We have to go now.”
“To Jacarutu?” Both twins looked out across the desert.
“The answer is there. I know it. We can’t turn back. We have to finish this. Muad’Dib the God must be destroyed. We must find the Golden Path.”
“It’s a dangerous path.”
“It’s the only way out of the trap. He saw it at the end. Our father’s last vision. He knew it was possible. You see, that’s what he left. Left to us.”
“You’re not telling me everything, are you? There are things you’ve seen that you keep from me. I can tell.”
There were so many things he couldn’t tell. About this, about Fandom. It pained him to have to keep that distance. ”Only things that I don’t even understand.” Or can’t tell you because it would risk paradox. “Yet. But I have faith, Ghani. Faith that no matter what happens, when the time comes we will both know what to do.”
“Are you sure we will make it?”
“Sure that if we don’t try we will have failed.”
“I’m frightened.”
“Fear is the mindkiller.” He leaned close, resting his forehead against hers.
“I will face my fear.” Ghani continued the litany.
“I will let it pass through me.”
