Black Squirrel Dilemma!

Hey everyone! I'm a bit new to this whole scene so I hope you guys can help me. My boyfriend hunts, and he was able to get a black squirrel. He lives about 4 hours away from me, and I would like to maybe get the fur and bones from the squirrel. Obviously you wouldn't just throw the squirrel in the trunk as is, haha. Would you just freeze it, or is there something else that should be done to it as well to preserve it on the drive back?

Also, how would I preserve the fur after skinning it? I've seen a bunch of tutorials on how to tan, but that seemed to only be sans fur. Would it be the same methods with fur?
