Today, in Kinokuniya Ngee Ann City, there is neither Bleach Official Bootleg nor One Piece Treasures.
My coffers, they are safe.
Was pleasantly surprised as I came out of Ngee Ann City though, because my friends were there, organising an Indonesian-themed festival titled "Enchanting Indonesia". They were fundraising for this year's IndoArtFest. That location was pretty high-profile, I suppose the event's held by the Embassy because it's unlikely a bunch of young expats can get the money to rent the space on their own. Met a lot of old faces, saw a lot of new faces I don't recognise too.
My mistake is intending to go back to my friend's flat, where I'm staying, to park my bags before returning to the Festival again, because I ran out of prepaid mobile credits and hence didn't call to inform them I'm on the way. And when I reached the flat...
...no one was home because they went to the Festival. On hindsight, I should've used the public phone.
Thank God for the community library because they have comfy couches and a café. And Thank God I remember to bring the
Northern Lights novel I nicked from my brother's bookshelf last week when I visited him in Bandung. Have read up to half of the book right now, and I find it a very enjoyable read. People disappointed by JKR's writing technique might want to seek this for their child-PoV fantasy fiction.
It's gripping from the get-go, where the heroine finds herself in a danger situation right away, but then our prejudices are turned totally upside down, more than once.
It's been described as "children lit" but I'm not sure that's befitting. It contains some deep ideas that can be considered subversive, especially pertaining religious dogma. Or maybe the child-lit classification is due to the assumption that kids aren't capable to pick up the ideas yet, and would only rave on the shapeshifting dæmon or armoured bears? I won't pretend to know.
The armoured bear, though, sounds really damned cool.
Also:
The bookfilm's trailer (retitled Golden Compass, like its US title), because they're appealing the hearts of internet geeks by thoughtfully providing the code on
the official site.
I imagined Catherine Zeta-Jones for Mrs Coulter, but Nicole Kidman's a good pick, even if they make the character blonde.
Addendum:
My dæmon is Arion; he's a spider.
I actually like spiders (though I do clear out webs when cleaning the house), so that's fine. Wanted it to be a cat, but on second thought, that would be quite boring.
