It's been a fun couple of weeks in the city because there has been lots to look forward to. Mom came into town last week for my birthday so I spent a lot of time staying in Midtown with her and seeing shows. First we saw "In the Heights" a new musical about my current neighborhood. It was very bizarre to look at a stage and see a set which was composed of the view of the George Washington Bridge I see every night walking down the street and the 181st Street subway station sign that I use every day. The show was great, the score wonderful and the choreography was unlike anything I've ever seen. Very hip-hop influenced but still very jazzy in nature. Right up my alley. So we saw that on my birthday and went out to Joe Allen's after and I got the chocolate fudge cake with ice cream which is to die for. Mmmmm.
Turning 23 is weird. It's doesn't feel particularly different but it definitely feels like I'm progressing through my twenties, which obviously I am. I don't know, 23 is definitely that out of college age yet college was just a little while ago time. Anyway, the best part of the weekend with mom was seeing "Passing Strange", a new rock, semi-autobiographical, small show that has transferred to Broadway from the Public Theatre. For anyone who does or even does NOT like musicals, it's the show for you. The theatre literally is ROCKED by this show. The music and lyrics are incredible touching for anyone who has ever wondered how to find and identify the "real" in their life. Even though it focuses on a black man's journey from LA to Europe, it really is so universal. Just wonderfully done.
Mom was also in town with friend Cindy. They really are the funniest of best friends. There really does get to be a point when two people know each other a little too well. It's humorous. The trip ended with seeing "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof", the first sanctioned African American cast to do the show. It starred Terrence Howard, Phylicia Rashad, James Earl Jones and Anika Noni Rose. I really enjoyed them all but I think Anika really carried the show. She was just stunning. What a triple threat. The girl can sing for Jesus and shake her thang but she went to school for straight acting. She commanded the stage and the production was miles better than the last revival with Ashley Judd. Just to hear a legend like James Earl Jones dominate with that voice (Darth Vader, Mufasa, "This is CNN" haha) was just chilling. It's fun to watch legends. :-)
This week consisted of working my new job at SmartTix and my audition for Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre, an Equity theatre in Missouri that is doing Big, Cats and West Side Story this summer. I have a callback to dance tomorrow. Must kick ass and get some Equity points. It would be an awesome job to get so fingers crossed and mind focused to have a great dance call.
The great news of today is that all my UNH friends come into town for their New York showcase! Can't wait to see them all.
