Memorial day: a time for remembering what came before. Once upon a
time there was a time honored American tradition: the tradition of
early dismissal on the day before holidays and long weekends. In
decades past, a hard working functionary, technocrat, or administrator
could rely on permission to leave the office at 3 on such days - a
benefit largely enjoyed by those with short tenures affecting their
annual leave balance. Then one day, a mean fairy descended and stole
away these magic hours, taking them deep into the center of the earth
and feeding them into the master-data processor along with small
babies abandoned in the sewers.

Bureaucrat seeks companion to illicitly relive those glory days of
only 3 short years past. We’ve been working hard, being productive,
but the time comes when reality much be appeased! It is almost summer:
time to revel in nostalgia. The nostalgia of early dismissal. I
propose an appeasement strategy of fruity umbrella drinks atop the
Brooklyn Bridge: Are you the one who is brave enough to take that
first, small but courageous step toward freedom?
