Although the popular 1937-D Three-Legged Buffalo's name derives from the missing front left (facing) leg, curiously, the hoof on that leg is still present, despite the overeager die polishing that apparently created the variety. Despite the many bogus coins present in the marketplace - this variety should always be purchased certified, never raw - there are many other die diagnostics on each side that characterize examples of the genuine item.

The fifth edition, volume one of the Cherrypickers' Guide gives the Three-Legged Buffalo a ranking of 5 for Interest and Liquidity, the maximum, while assigning it a 14 on the Universal Rarity Scale. In other words, 4,001 to 8,000 examples survive in all conditions, yet it is nonetheless an issue with enduring popularity in any grade, one that readily changes hands and finds eager buyers.

The Three-Legged Buffalo is often found in grades of XF and AU, and even examples in the lower Mint State grade are seen with some regularity, up to the near-Gem level. Gem examples and the occasional Premium Gem, however, are conditionally quite rare, and when offered at auction they meet a host of potential buyers.

Heritage has been privileged to offer a number of top-grade examples of the Three-Legged Buffalo in recent auctions, MS65 and MS66 pieces certified by PCGS or NGC that have generally brought in the range from mid-five-figure prices up to $86,000-plus for an MS66 PCGS example we offered in 2005. PCGS has seen a few examples in MS66 as their top grade, while NGC has certified three submissions in MS67, including one with the Star designation.

Our upcoming Summer FUN auction contains one of the finest-preserved examples we have handled of the Three-Legged variant. The surfaces glow with rich, satiny mint luster and the strike details are uncommonly strong for an issue that is normally weak. Slight rose and lilac is seen over each side but does not impede the power of the underlying mint brilliance.

U.S. coins, more offered in July 12 and 13 sale in Orlando
More than 2,200 lots of Colonial coins, United States coins from half cents through gold $20 double eagles and more will be offered in three public sessions July 12 and 13 by Heritage Auctions in conjunction with the summer convention staged by Florida United Numismatists in Orlando.

The auction’s offerings will include U.S. patterns, pioneer gold, silver and gold commemorative coins, early Proof sets, coins of Hawaii, medals and tokens, and error coins.
Among the highlights in the auction are a 1776 Continental Currency dollar, with CURRENCY spelling in the inscription; a 1795 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves silver dollar; an 1854 Indian Head gold dollar; an 1848 Coronet, CAL. gold $2.50 quarter eagle; and a 1799 Capped Bust, Heraldic Eagle, Small Stars gold $5 half eagle.

The 1776 Continental Currency dollar in the auction is the Newman 2-C variety (1776 Continental Currency Coinage & Varieties of the Fugio Cent by Eric P. Newman). The coin, in pewter, Lot 3008, is graded and encapsulated About Uncirculated 55 by Professional Coin Grading Service.

According to the auction lot description, “Little evidence exists of the history of the Continental Currency coins, although it is certain that they were struck in 1776 as the dates suggests.”

Numismatic researcher Michael Hodder believes the Continental Currency coins were produced in the late summer of 1776 in New York before British capture of the city in September.
“It is thought that these pieces were made to replace the paper dollar, and in fact, the New York paper money issue of August 13, 1776, omitted that denomination,” according to the auction lot description.

Advertorial by Heritage Auctions

An outstanding selection of collector coins highlights the offerings in the upcoming Heritage Auctions 2012 July 12-15 US Coin Summer FUN Signature Auction, to take place at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando in conjunction with Florida United Numismatists' summer convention.

The selections in this auction include a number of very popular coins in high grades. One of the offerings is a MS60 1893-S dollar, one of the very few mint state examples certified of this tremendously popular date. While the grade MS60 conjures a mental image of a coin without eye appeal, nothing could be further from the truth in this case. The surfaces show a few marks, but they are scattered and minor, and the strike and eye appeal are excellent. It would not be a surprise to see this coin appear at a future date in a higher grade holder.
While the 1893-S dollar will undoubtedly wind up in the collection of a Morgan dollar specialist, another outstanding silver dollar, this one from about a century earlier, is more likely to be destined for a great type set. This auction includes a 1795 dollar in MS61, and with the tremendous prices brought by 1794 coins, 1795 becomes the only readily collectible date of the two-year Flowing Hair dollar series. In addition, this B-5, BB-27 variety is the most common variety of any 1795 dollar regardless of type, and as such is the most collectible Three Leaves example as well.

Another famous coin in this auction is the 1848 quarter eagle with CAL. stamped into the reverse. Many specialists consider this the first US commemorative coin, as the CAL. was added to denote that the gold used for the coin came from the California gold fields. Unlike other commemoratives, this coin was released directly into circulation, much like the more recent Bicentennial coinage and Statehood and America The Beautiful quarters.
