2014 “Florida Natives” American Alligator coin to be released at FUN convention.

November 12, 2013 (Charles D. Daughtrey, MCM Staff) Coinciding with the Florida United Numismatists (FUN) convention ModernCoinMart (MCM) is releasing a new coin depicting “Florida Natives”. The coin, which may be the first of a series, depicts the American Alligator, one of the oldest and most fearsome apex predatory reptiles in North America, and a common native to the State of Florida.

The design side of this coin depicts an American Alligator sitting in the sun along the shore of a Florida waterway, designed by ModernCoinMart staff artist Charles D. Daughtrey. The word “Florida” in large, stylish letters is in frosted relief above the colored vegetation surrounding the Alligator. The lower third of the design bears the scientific name of the American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis), the denomination ($1), and privy mark of a Florida/United States combination map (much like the one used in the FUN logo).

The reverse side of this coin depicts Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the year 2014, and the country of issue, Tuvalu. It also carries the inscription, “1oz 999 Silver” as these proof quality coins are each struck in 99.9% fine silver by the Perth Mint of Australia.

Total mintage for this issue is limited to 3,500 coins. Their international debut will be at the FUN convention, and a portion of the sale of each coin sold by MCM will be donated back to the FUN organization. The convention will be held from Thursday, January 9th, through Sunday, January 12th in Orlando, Florida.

While the price for these coins is yet to be determined, attendees at the 2014 FUN Show will receive a special discounted price during the show. They will also have the opportunity to meet the designer of the coin, MCM artist Charles D. Daughtrey. Any remaining unsold coins will be available for purchase online after the show at Modern Coin Mart or from other dealers that have arranged to purchase from MCM.
