Had a great night of sleep again last night (that's almost a week in a row...this never happens) and woke up at 7 am smelling coffee brewing. I almost got up but liked the idea of sleeping for another hour better. Coffee would still be there. Before I even got pants on, Jen and my mom yelled down,
"Travis!"
"...what?"
"SHH!!!! Come up quietly!"
"?"
Threw on some pants saw there was a deer wandering around in the deep snow of our yard! It was a really pretty doe. I went to take a picture and then it must have quickly had a baby and that baby must have quickly grown up because by the time I got downstairs there were two.
They just sat there staring at me through the window for a minute while I swore at my camera because the memory was full. I wish I'd had my 35mm at the ready. Jen's camera was full too and on video, so I got a great two second video of some blurry creatures with me swearing. One deer was stomping its foot while staring into my soul. I tried to open the door, but they were spooked and hopped around. I went upstairs and we watched them trudge through the snow across the front yard.
I love seeing deer. I love the reminder that they roam freely without human trails or boundaries. Coming into my yard makes me wish they weren't so afraid because I would love to share food and hospitality with them, but I know I'd probably just get bitten. I've seen a few around here since past autumn. Jen and I saw one run away while walking a trail, I saw one while skiing (I followed its tracks around the woods; it's tracks while bounding away were SO far apart), and we saw the two this morning. I love this place sometimes.
Been listening to a lot of Six Organs of Admittance and Mount Eerie/Microphones. Still reading Dawn. Wish I could pack up and move to a cabin in Norway for a couple of months, but I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon. I just read some of my new Backpacker Magazine and every time I read one I get these romantic ideas to just shove off and go on a 17-day trek through Nepal. Sigh...
Why don't I listen to Björk?
Today is possibly skiing with folks. Probably Abram and Leticia if they're up for it (call us). Today is also Clean the Laundry Room day. Right now the door is open pouring its cold harsh laundry room air into the basement and I am starting to feel chilled. Luckily I had an easy time starting the fire because there were still embers left. That always gives me a good feeling.
Lovingly but questioningly,
T
