Yesterday the cobwebs underneath our porch froze.
I had just set up a wireless thermometer the night before, and when I got up in the morning it said -14 F and I thought it was broken. Then I remembered everyone at the co-op screaming about freezing, and, "Hoo boy it's gonna be cold the next couple'a days," and something about revelations. Jen's car wouldn't start so she borrowed my mom's. We tried to jump start it, but it sounds like it might be the starter. I wish Car Talk was on today...
Today it was -20 F at 6 am. My car tried to start, but failed when I used the starter, so I went outside to manually do it. My coat became stiff and ridged, my pants froze up, and my sinus cavities immediately started to frost over. I walked to my car watching my breath form crystals in the air and float away for miles. My car started, reluctantly. I suddenly feel very sorry for Adam, who bikes everywhere downtown (he has no car. only five bicycles.)
I'm reading Phil Elverum's Dawn Journal right now. It's quite good. It fits the temperature outside, although I'm not going through the same experience. There's a lot more substance than I thought. It's a huge journal with teeeeeeny text. It's weird to be reading the personal thoughts by an artist I like, but then again he's the one who published it.
I went for a great ski with Abram and Leticia a couple of days ago.
It was a great time. I wish I'd taken more pictures, but my card filled up. We went around 3 pm, and the sun was coming in sideways through the trees and making everything all sorts of blues and purples and oranges and stretching shadows all along the trails. I broke my sunglasses that wrapped around my ears that were my dad's originally, and while functional were a total pain to take on and off, hence the breakage. We were skiing for about an hour, all alone up there. We celebrated in Abrams car with HOT chocolate. I say HOT because only capitals can convey the heat. I had it in my thermos in my backpack for the entire time (including trip up), and it was still as hot as if I had just taken it off the stove.
That night was Seth Rogan fest. We watched Pineapple Express and laughed hard, then we watched The 40 Year Old Virgin because Leticia hadn't seen it. It was a good time. Six beers later I went to sleep.
Last night I played with Larry and Trevor again. We recorded our three long jams that were everything from droney funks to bong-fueled grooves. I can't wait to hear the cd of it. I got a blister and I love that it's there. So I don't know what the future is holding for the three of us, but it seems to be Resonator. We're not going to start writing yet; Larry is going to be a father in April, and he's going back to teaching/school soon, so we need to get back into that second semester routine. It's so exciting to be playing with them. I am oozing excitement.
Here is this morning, in case you missed it:
Be well and be sure to eat your vegetables.
