A thought on the current Middle East war that isn't moral reprehension...
People claim that due to Israel's invasion of the Lebanon, and possible action againt Syria, oil supplies will be under threat. How? First, consider the fact that in all the wars in the Middle East in the last fifty years, there has never been major disruption to the supply of oil to the west. Shuv points out to me that Istael is very fond of attacking fuel dumps at airports, power plants, et cetera (because clearly you can fight terrorism by destroying critical public infrastrucutre). The way I see it, this is entirely different; it's one thing to attack oil dumps that will be used by your supposed enemies, and another entirely to attack the lifeline of the West. Even if the Zionists won't do it because they fear reprisal from Bush (because as Shuv rightly points out, it's corporations and not the gubmint that controls the States), I get the feeling they won't do it purely out of self-interest: who owns the controlling shares in a good deal of American companies and banks? Call me a Nazi, but we know it's true.
In other news, Swordfish is a diabolically silly movie. Not only is it an example of an attempt to manufacture a cult classic, but it has stupid plot drop-offs; oh look, Travolta isn't a petty theif, but is in fact a militiaman of freedom! Shit, they could have constructed it better.
