I get to see Yo-Yo Ma in March!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He's doing a Silk Road concert in Ann Arbor. Four of the cellists got tickets and one of them backed out, so they asked me if I wanted to join. I just got done with my cello lesson, and I kinda had a big breakthrough that might make this soooo much easier for me. He was having me play my concerto, and it started out ok, but then I missed a note, then I started getting frustrated and missing more and it kind of became one vicious cycle. Today was a very, very long day. Jen showed up last night at almost 11, as it took about an hour longer then the subway map said it should have. Then we ended up eating fried chicken on the roof, and just hung out as we made fun of the cats, who stood guard of the door, waiting for their moment to escape (bad kitties!). I now get the special priveledge of being able to use AC in my room. Electricity prices here are ridiculous, so we generally don't use AC until we absolutely need to (August). However, the humidity is incredibly high right now, and I currently can't tune my cello because the pegs have expanded. My mom doesn't have a dehumidifier, so the only ( Read more... )

I went up to the Vairocana International Buddhist Meditation Center in northern Seoul today to talk to them about helping out with teaching the kid's English Dharma school (bowing and readings and such). Rostropovich died yesterday, he was 80. He was probably the best cellist of the 20th century, a true genius of the cello. He taught Jacqueline du Pre while she lived in Moscow. This is just one more great cellist who I will never get to see play or meet.

One of the biggest obstacles I've been trying to overcome with cello has been my shaky hands. They shake naturally (it's something I've inherited from my mom's side of the family), doctors have looked into it and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong, it's just something that happens. Our cello studio recital is today at 5:30, it's one of 3 recitals today (and will probably be the least interesting lol). We're all playing Popper etudes and Bach unaccompanied because they've recently decided to make us pay to use an accompanist (like every other college, woohoo!).
