Because I was so busy with getting my PC back to normal I missed the episode when it was on TV on Sunday. But yay for the internet!
There are 2 translation things in this episode that I was curious about. The first is the first scene. I think they could have done it better, used some more common mistakes.
In the translation the hung/hanged thing was changed from a grammar mistake to a fact mistake. Dude says he'll get hanged, Sherlock says he'll get shot. They could have translated dude's "hung" with "gehangen" (instead of "gehängt") or maybe "aufknöpfen" vs. "aufknüpfen". Hmph.
Not really happy with the voice for Sherlock. John's is okay, but Sherlock's is just... argh! The voice actor's voice isn't deep enough, but he's trying and that makes it sound weird. Also he's kinda, sorta trying to imitate Sherlock's way of speaking, which just isn't working for him. He makes Sherlock sound like he's high on chill pills or something. Allow me to describe with textures. Benedict Cumberbatch's voice is like melted chocolate, om nom nom. The voice actor's voice it's more like velvet... there's a fuzziness about it, but it's too dry.
Hahaha, what the fuck, Sarah and John using the formal you. They had a date, but still say "Sie"? Does that happen in real life?
Mycroft, and with that voice, saying "Kumpel", hahaha.
Der Blog? Oh, all this computer/internet stuff, sometimes we just don't know what the right article is for an English loanword. For me a blog is an it.
"Five pips" -> "fünf vor zwölf" ooookay then. But there's something good about it: now I'm thinking of the Wir sind Helden song 23:55: Alles auf Anfang, haha. Fun song, even more fun live.
Seriously, why are they using a serif font in German when it's a sans serif in the original? What's the poooiiiint?
Oooh! Oooh, oooh, oooh! Almost Jim time! That's the second thing I was curious about: How do they translate the hey/gay thing? But first: the voice actor. They got a really likable voice, which should be known to people. Nice fakeout there *thumbs up*! Let me list a few of this voice actor's characters: McGee (NCIS), Ron Stoppable (Kim Possible), Greg (CSI), Ianto (Torchwood), Peter Parker (Spider-Man). But it's not just well done regarding the fakeout (Although... you can hear that guy all over the place, people know this voice and that could be a dead giveaway. You know how you can almost always tell who did it because you recognize the actor?), it's also good casting voice-wise. I think it fits. It's pretty fucking perfect! I'm not sure if it's possible, but I think I love Jim even more now.
Aha! "Schwul"/"cool" - so that's how they solved the hey/gay thing. Nice. Well, isn't that great dialoging: Molly just said that it's an office romance, so a "cool" there would make sense.
Oystercard = elektronische Fahrkarte. Like.
Geldbörse. So it's not the loanwords that German Sherlock likes, it's just the Latin ones. Sometimes they're overdoing it a bit. Some of those words I wouldn't know if I didn't know English.
"unemployed" -> "chronisch unterbeschäftigt" haha.
Bit of rhyming in the 'translation' of "Meretricious." - "And a happy new year.": "Medioker." - "Mit Joker könnt ich das auch." See, mediocre/medioker - there's the Latin thing again where I didn't know it's a word in German and only know what it means because I know it from English.
I swear the quality of the German on-screen texts got better since the first episode.
German voice of Ms. Wenceslas fits very well.
When Sherlock is typing on the laptop we get a translation via subtitle and it's appearing like Sherlock's just typing it. I like that.
Last Sunday I was just putting my flist on the favorites bar of the newly installed Firefox and saw in the top entry that it said "Sherlock in german on TV" in the music metadata. I turned on the TV right away and saw that the episode wasn't over yet. I managed to catch the last 9 minutes. :oD
Oh god, Jim, why are you so awesome? Seriously, this voice actor is perfect! I saw that already on Sunday. I knew that already when I read the voice actor they chose.
