This has been a rather dim, depressing week all round, with hardly any sun and an unpleasant combination of humidity and cold. I spent most of it trying to catch up on the work I hadn't been able to do online over the horrible rainy weekend and sewing sock monkeys. BT turned out to be surprisingly efficient, with an engineer turning up on Tuesday. The problem seems to have been in the cable from the router to the socket, but since it was still under warranty he got them to send me a new router, which arrived promptly on Thursday.

The gradual improvement in the weather has accompanied an equally gradual improvement in mood, and today, when I realised that the only clean trousers I had were the ones with the hole and the paint splashes, I did two loads of washing in the laundrette and finally got my aggrieved letter to the hospital written and posted. I'm a bit wary of antagonising anyone there, especially the surgeon, who will be chopping me up in due course. The PALS people I spoke to on the phone didn't seem very interested - perhaps being polite and calm was a mistake, and I would have been better sounding more livid, but I didn't have the heart. We will see what the response to the letter is, anyway.

Yesterday, in a fleeting patch of sunshine, I actually ventured into the little park across the road, that I am supposed to be investigating for the London Parks and Squares Trust. I don't usually go there, because it has a rather bad reputation, and many sheltered nooks in which evil-doers can hide. Yesterday morning all the evil-doers must have been still in bed, because all I met was a couple of mothers with small children in the playground, an elderly couple walking their dog and a trio of coppers, (which may be why it all seemed so peaceful). All these people said good morning to me, which was rather nice and unexpected. I saw several notices declaring the park an "alcohol-free zone". Surprisingly, this seems to have cleared out all the drunks who used to congregate on the benches. A great improvement - the only person I saw on any of the benches was a harmless-looking woman drinking Red Bull. I wonder where the drunks have gone? (not that I miss them much)
